What my mother taught me...

Be a decent human being.
Treat others with dignity & respect.
Know your ethics & principles and stand by them
Everyone has a right to their opinion and view
Always seek out a point of empathy for others
Always be civil (see dignity & respect)
And don’t LIE.

If you live by those standards, you will be doing your part to make the world will be a better place.
If you have to LIE, that is a sign that you don’t really believe in the strength and validity of your own values and principles, and feel you have to manipulate the truth, instead of counting on your own beliefs.
That’s what I learned from my mother...who was a Marxist and an atheist.
Enough for people to condemn her.
