[THREAD]: 14 years ago today our National Director Jessica Jackson Sloan stood in a Georgia courtroom. With her 2 month old daughter in her arms, she watched as her then-husband was sentenced to 6 years in prison for a first time low level drug crime.
That traumatizing experience ignited a fire within her, pushing her to law school, her city council, and eventually founding #cut50 with @VanJones68.

Years ago, I used to say the best time to have money is when you’re young and can enjoy it. Now, I’ve realized that you need money more when you are older. Kids, retirement etc. Don’t be desperate. You don’t have today, you can have tomorrow & still enjoy life.

There is no latecomer in the “success world” or “rich world”. Whenever you get there, you are welcome. You will enjoy your life and almost forget you ever suffered. It doesn’t have to be now and there is no prize for being the first person to get “there”.
When I was in my teens and early twenties & a bit of late twenties, I used to marvel at how some of my age mates were enjoying life. I felt I would never catch up and they were already ahead of me. Tah! There is nothing like that. Today, none of us remembers who succeeded first.

2 years ago today, @rachael_scar and I walked into the neurologist's office. She was carrying 4-month-old Baby Carl on her chest.

We walked out an hour later with my death sentence. ALS would paralyze and then kill me, and there wasn't anything we could to stop it.
How would we persevere? What we do with the short time I had left? How could we find hope in the dark?

These were our personal challenges. But they became questions for the nation a month later when Donald Trump was elected president.
Over the past 24 months, I lost the ability to run, and then even to walk; the ability to cut food, and then even to feed myself; the ability to speak quickly, and soon even to speak at all.

And yet, this journey has been better than I feared. On most days, I am happy.

A few months ago, i had tweeted about being paid a visit at my place of business by two smartly dressed plain-clothes police officers and a Chinese national.
They said that they had "evidence" that a vehicle registered to me was involved in a house-breaking in Kilimani.

#Today's story to #EndFamilySeparation Four months ago, Dad and 4-month-old entered at the Texas/Mexico border and requested #asylum. Dad and child were immediately separated and the baby put in ORR custody. #FamiliesBelongTogether
Dad was detained in a #Texas detention center where @RAICESTEXAS consulted. Dad accepted a deportation to be quickly reunited w/ his infant child. However, the Dad was deported & NOT his child. The now 8-month-old baby has been in ORR custody for 4 months. #EndFamilySeparation
The Mom and Dad now have once weekly Skype calls with their 8-month-old baby. That's right, folks. They Skype with an infant. #EndFamilySeparation #FamiliesBelongTogether

This thread captures history from various perspectives all blended together to reveal a fuller picture.

It shows that Saro-Wiwa was also human like any of us but he was exceptionally courageous and dogged in spite of his human flaws.
Saro-Wiwa was a diminutive man who invariably always smoked a pipe and was considered quite brilliant.

He wrote a popular play which was adapted for TV when we were younger “Basi and Company”.

He was from Ogoni - an oil-producing area in Rivers State which has several villages.
