Great question! The Goldilocks principle still remains valid, and underscores a similar point made by many analysts today: the nuclear program is simply too valuable for the North Korean leadership to give up. Let me offer up a few more thoughts (mini-thread):
One proviso to keep in mind: my work explores how nations leverage the mere latent potential to produce nuclear weapons as an instrument of coercion. I focus on when nuclear technology - not operational nuclear forces - provides the most coercive leverage: dx.doi.org/10.1080/096364…
Since North Korea crossed the weapons threshold during the Six Party Talks, I would point you toward the extensive lit about relative bargaining power among nuclear weapon states and the logic of arms control.

A few thoughts on the summit as I look back over @monkeycageblog coverage of North Korea for a roundup post. Political scientists often seem like downers, but we are trained to look for hidden, structural forces. The result is often a strong bias toward the status quo. 1/n
It’s not that we don’t think leaders matter (I wrote a book that says they do; but just see yesterday’s news) or that face-to-face diplomacy can’t achieve results (much recent scholarship on this, as post by @Prof_MHolmes & @YarhiMilo shows). 2/n washingtonpost.com/news/monkey-ca…
But breakthroughs don’t come out of nowhere. It takes work and preparation even when summits matter. This is why we are more likely to point to incremental steps or the legwork (like, um, lining up allies before meeting adversaries) behind the final product or communique. 3/n

2/ It is also reported Asow militia actively recruited openly during largest German #xrw concert in #Themar in July 2017. This shows how much underestimated the threat of #xrw foreign fighters compared to #jihadists is. Imagine outcry if #ISIS would openly recruit at a concert.
