I studied philosophy a while ago and have done lots of thinking and writing since, but I still haven't found any more elegant and true than Emmanuel Kant's maxim that, no matter what we believe, we should treat other people as ends not means.

The rest is commentary.
It's a test to apply to your own life.

Does your philosophical or political creed aim towards some great future which is radically different to the present?

If yes, does reaching that future require using lots of other people as a means to achieve it?

If so, rethink.
Another way of putting it: do you say "well you need to break a few eggs to make an omelette"? If so, you're in trouble

Everyone should be treated with dignity and not as a resource of impediment to help you or your group achieve some utopia which the other people didn't ask for
