Still reading lots of articles speculating on why the economy isn't helping the GOP more. But as poli sci ppl know, it never seems to matter much in midterms. Here's % growth in jobs to November versus change in House seats held by the WH party 1/
D wave in 2006 and R wave in 2014 both took place despite job growth as good as or better than we're seeing now. In midterms, it's not the economy, stupid 2/

There's a political puzzle that has worried me for a while, and is highlighted by some of the responses to today's column. What some of the pushback against @SenWarren comes down to is "I feel like she's talking down to me" 1/ nytimes.com/2019/01/07/opi…
The reason this is puzzling is that she really isn't. She does try to explain issues, but there isn't any condescension I can find -- and nothing like the sneering contempt for his supporters that shines through everything Trump does and says 2/
Yet this is a real thing, not to be wished away. And I don't think it's just sexism -- in general, politicians who try to understand issues get grief from a segment of voters who seem perfectly happy with politicians who clearly consider them chumps 3/

I was sort of startled by how much reaction this piece on top tax rates got; most of it positive, but the negative reactions were revealing 1/ nytimes.com/2019/01/05/opi…
Not surprisingly, most of the pushback came from the right, where I got a fair number of complaints that the government has no right to tax away income that people have earned. Worth thinking about that: isn't it an argument against any taxation at all? 2/
Or if you admit that we need a government, maybe it's an argument against any kind of progressive taxation (and also against any social safety net). And that's a coherent point of view -- but one the public overwhelmingly rejects 3/ pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2017…

The state of the art of storytelling improves with time the same as any other technology, which is why Twilight is better written than Foundation.
Note that I mean "this is the thing that causes Twilight to be better written than Foundation". I'm not asserting quality as a function of time; I think an unbiased analysis of the writing of both books bears this out.
The problem is, how do you get an unbiased analysis? You'd need someone skilled in literary analysis who is unfamiliar with Foundation's status as a classic by one of The Greats or Twilight's status as modern pop fantasy trash for sighing girls.

I chose Oct 29th for this thread because that’s when they really started picking up.
“Donald J. Trump” dominated the From field most of Oct. In the week before the midterms, they switched to a big mix of surrogates: Donald Trump Jr. (1st email of 2018), Eric Trump (8th), Melania Trump (5th), Lara Trump (23rd), Newt Gingrich (12th), & Brad Parscale (12th).

The #FBI was investigating Clinton and Trump during the 2016 campaigns.
But while the FBI publicly revealed the investigation of HRC--more than once-- they never revealed investigation of Trump.

If the FBI wanted to go after Trump, as is alleged in this ludicrous #NunesMemo, all that was needed was to reveal the investigation. But instead they kept it super, ultra secret--even to the press, as was made clear with this embarrassing header.

It took a year and a half for the story to actually break of what happened--"coffee boy" #GeorgePapadopoulos exposed the connections.
The #SteeleDossier was never more than a side-trip on the road to indictments.
Pretending otherwise just isn't smart.

1. Listen up @GOP @HouseGOP @SenateGOP! My entire life, every time #GOP takes control they break the economy. Every. Time. Clearly you don't learn from your mistakes, or just cave to the disgusting 'party over country' battle cries. Pay attention - this is why you fail.
2. Two consistent platform features push diametrically against each other. An adherence to the failed 'Trickle Down Economics' model & Deregulation. Your core desire for small government will result in failure of your economic plan every time. The #GOPTaxScam will be disasterous.
3. Your model fails because you stack the deck for those at the top and then sit back touting your laissez-faire foundation, just hoping your 'plan' is going to magically happen in a socially beneficial way - and, repeatedly, it doesn't. Why not?
