So I've seen a number of comments from folks in the industry (or who are trying to get into the industry) struggling with feelings of self-worth, imposter syndrome, etc. I've a few thoughts on this, if you care to listen. (Thread incoming)
Here's the thing: I've met a lot of really successful folks in the industry. Maybe you include me among them. And you know what? They 𝑎𝑙𝑙 struggle. They're 𝑎𝑙𝑙 just winging it half the time, thinking "what the hell am I even doing here?"
Sure, every now and again you have that moment of brilliance where you do something cool and it worked out and you think "yeaaaahh I got this", but those are nowhere near as common as the moments of crippling anxiety or certainty you're a fraud who only lucked into your position.
I know lots of people in the industry who struggle with depression. 𝐼 struggle with depression. Some people might say it's because I'm creative or sensitive, but that's bull... writing is ℎ𝑜𝑤 I cope, it's not the source of my creativity.
The day I left BioWare I went from feeling confident to being suddenly certain I'd made the worst mistake of my life, and calling a friend to come and sit with me as I -- a 43 year-old man -- wept inconsolably from what felt like a panic attack.
I don't say these things to garner sympathy, I say them so you see success does not make you invulnerable. We're all muddling along, and your moments of doubt and brilliance are no different than ours. You can do this.
If I could offer advice? Do it 𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑎𝑢𝑠𝑒 it scares you. Do it because the alternative is intolerable to you, because that's a life you won't abide, and then jump in with both feet. The people I know who are successful did it 𝑎𝑛𝑦𝑤𝑎𝑦... doubts and all.
This is not to belittle your fears. They are so real - believe me, you are and always will be your worst enemy. Just don't hesitate solely because you think you can't, that you'll never match up. You will, and you'll surprise yourself. Be awesome. (Thread done)
