The attempted censorship of a website run by a coalition of gun rights groups is far more aggressive than anything we've seen with Alex Jones. Amazon took down their hosting. Facebook has blocked any post with a link to the site in it. freebeacon.com/issues/gun-rig…
Here's what happens if you try to share Codeisfreespeech.com on Facebook. Facebook told me they are removing all content associated with the site from their platform.
Facebook told me they are blocking links to CodeIsFreeSpeech.com because it violates their community standards but I couldn't find one it violates and they wouldn't answer any of my follow up questions. freebeacon.com/issues/gun-rig…
The gun rights groups behind CodeIsFreeSpeech.com told me they have not been contacted by the State Department or any other government officials over their publishing of gun designs. freebeacon.com/issues/gun-rig…
Facebook sent me a link to this section of their community standards when they told me they are blocking links to CodeIsFreeSpeech.com but I don't see how posting links to the site violates it. facebook.com/communitystand…
Facebook is now telling me on background that they are working on updating their written policy on 3D printed guns and expect to post it soon.
Facebook also says they feel the ban on 3D printing instructions is in line with their regulated goods policy and is intended to limit gun sales and exchanges to licensed dealers.
I'm not sure how that follows since sharing gun blueprints or assembly instructions is not the same as selling or transferring actual firearms but I've repeatedly asked for a phone interview with no response and I've emailed additional questions to their spokesperson.
It feels like Facebook is just giving me pre-approved generic statements and not actually trying to answer my questions. It's even more off-putting that they're seeking background status to give me these statements that they're clearly giving to other media outlets too.
For instance, they gave BuzzFeed the exact same statement they gave me. They appear to have requested background to give the same quote to BuzzFeed too. Why do they need this quote they're giving to everybody to be on background? buzzfeednews.com/article/joseph…
UPDATE: Facebook now tells me they will also ban the sharing of instructions on how to manufacture firearms using CNC machines. freebeacon.com/issues/gun-rig…
I get the feeling they're basically just winging this and making up new policies as they go along...
