1/ Make a list of the best engineers you know, whether you think they’re available or not. Go through your Facebook and LinkedIn to jog your memory.
2/ Get lunch or dinner with them to talk about your startup.
3/ Make the ask – “would you consider joining us?”.
4/ Whatever they answer, ask a follow up question “if you did join us, which engineers would you most want to hire?”.
5/ Ask for an introduction to those people.
6/ Repeat 2 – 5 with them.
7/ Repeat 1 – 6 ad infinitum. I know public company founders who still do this.

Because my reflections from what I learned this year seemed to resonate, here are the things I’ve committed to myself for 2019.
I am going to try to start every interaction I have with another person with empathy first. This sounds like some hippie shit and 10 yrs ago I would have laughed in my own face, but I actually believe it makes my daily life MUCH better.
I am going to continue working on my diet, by starting the year trying to eat vegan for at least 30 days in January. May extend if it works for me. My primary reason is to reduce consumption of animal protein. Secondary reason is ethical.

This year has been a massive one for self-discovery, self-awareness, and self-improvement for me. I wrote out what I learned about myself in 2018 and thought I would share it here:
I am a naturally reactive person (as opposed to a naturally curious one). This makes me a good “0 to 1” or war-time CEO: I am very good at short term problem solving to get to a short term goal. I am very good at laser-focusing on the top 1 to 3 problems.
But one’s greatest strength can be their greatest weakness. Unfortunately this same quality makes it hard to build sustainable operations over time: constant focus on the problem of the day means you aren’t building for the long term.

1/ Startup founders are often very frustrated with the process of raising money from investors, because what investors look for at an early stage can be very counter intuitive. Some founders pitch profitability or risk-free but slow growth, and are puzzled when investors pass.
2/ Early stage startups have high risk and high reward, resulting in a power law distribution of returns for investors. Investors at the top of this power law believe the way they evaluate startups is the key to their success.
3/ Potential to be be successful, or even really successful, isn’t good enough for top investors. Founders need to show that you have a truly huge opportunity.

So #Facebook & #Instagram (second time in 3 weeks) deleted my accounts. For sharing information about #Kashmir. No explanations or replies to my questions are given. Of course this is not about Facebook, nor about me, but the much more dangerous path SM is taking.
It is all about Justice & about what is happening to many people living under oppression & facing severe surveillance & suppression on the ground and even online.
It is about principals & rights. Human rights. Enshrined in statues & bragged about. Said to be universal. Said to be
I don't know ONE Kashmiri who hasn't been subjected to some form of censorship. On the ground there are far worse consequences than removed posts. Journalists (and MANY civilians) have been trashed, arrested & targeted when covering human rights violations by India.

Last year I failed a student.

I'm not saying the student got an F in my class. Sometimes students fail a class.

What I'm saying is *I* failed – as the student's teacher, as a educator, as the person responsible for giving the student a chance learn, to succeed. (1/x)
One student in my course wasn't doing all the problem sets. Well, they did the first few and did fine on them, but in weeks 3 to 13, they didn't do any of them.

Now, normally in general chemistry I look at the halfway point (week 7ish) to see if students are struggling. (2/x)
Somehow I missed this student wasn't doing their work. That's the first way I failed.

But last year I also started having no deadlines for problem sets. Just get them done by the final and you can get full credit. So this student wasn't necessarily in bad shape! (3/x)

First let's talk about book sales. Say your Local Independent Bookstore is deciding what to sell. They decide to take a risk on a book by an unknown author, called Electric Arches. They order 100 copies. 80 of them sell. They can return the remaining 20 and get their money back.

After 70 years of imperial/neoliberal indoctrination the web of lies is so obviously absurde (9/11, Skripal, WH = ISIS, etc.), that it is dissoluting. The empathetic humanity connects, closes ranks and sends their eternal psychopathic rulers and their lackeys into nowhere land.
The "evil empire" is a lifelong three year old child. I certainly loved my children at that age too, however only because they created not only a surreal mess, but also made steady progress.

A great documentary about psychopathy and society:
The elite invented "democracy" to protect them from the empathetic people. The media are their means for misleading the people sedated by "democracy". This is definitely a bad thing since the people have become educated and the elite almost totally insane.

With all the concern over Facebook Privacy being highlighted with the recent Cambridge Analytica investigation, I thought I'd share some tips on how to 'clean up & crack down' on your Facebook profile. #CambridgeAnalyticaUncovered #Facebook
The obvious thing to do is shut down your profile. However, DEACTIVATING your profile does NOT delete your data. Facebook retain that in case you decide to return. This is an important distinction: if you just want to deactivate - Settings -> Manage Account -> Deactivate
If you want Facebook to delete your data, you need to go to facebook.com/help/delete_ac… - however you may want to archive your old photos and data before doing so, and to be doubly sure, you'll want to manually unlink the external apps and delete your posts and likes.
