Er. Look, I’m pretty hardcore #TeamAnalytic & have the predictable view that a lot of Continental stuff is obfuscationist nonsense, but this is just ignorant. They’re essentially different disciplines with different (albeit overlapping) subject matters and approaches.
It’s not any more “telling” than the fact that we have marine biology & molecular biology. Philosophy used to encompass what we now class as psychology, political science, sociology, the natural sciences... it just winnowed down in a different direction on the continent.
If it tells us anything about philosophy as a discipline, it’s just that “philosophy” lacks a well-defined subject matter beyond “problems sufficiently intractable that we haven’t made enough progress to split them off into their own departments yet.”
Let’s face it, as a disciplinary label, “love of wisdom” is pretty open-ended.
Also, anyone who cares enough to be this deep in the thread is presumably already aware, but: There are analytic & Continental philosophers working everywhere. The labels are a historical accident.
