This 30 min doc from 1964 is worth your time. It explains in a quite even handed way the history of Derry, and its Catholic/Protestant populations. It predates the start of the troubles. and was not broadcast for another 25 years. (via @Mark_Coughlan) rte.ie/archives/exhib…
it also features playwright Brian Friel's father, Paddy Friel, and explores the types of discrimination against Catholics at the time (company directors receiving extra votes being one example given)
it also serves as a useful brief history lesson to those who don't know much about the history of British colonialism in Ireland.
Worth noting two things: Radharc (meaning 'view' in Irish) was a Catholic current affairs show for RTE, and this was one of the first shows that was not presented by a priest.
The clear undercurrent in the show foreshadows what was to come: a civil rights movement, that precipitated a reaction, that precipitated an armed conflict. A familiar pattern in Irish history.
I've just rewatched it. It's really good. No doubt of interest to lots of people @derrycityfc @DerryVisitor @derryjournal @Derry_Chamber @DerryDiaspora
