This means nothing to ya'll, but today is the 15 year anniversary of the time myself and another radio DJ accidentally played ‘Candy’ by 8 Ball & MJG on a gospel station for 4 hours straight, no commercials….on a Sunday morning. A thread. #SundayStoryTime
For those that don’t know radio, on Sunday mornings there aren’t many jocks in the building. The voices you hear between songs are all pre-recorded breaks. Real Jocks don’t get to the station until 10-11am. The building is empty except for one man.The board operator. aka Board Op
Every radio station houses about 4-5 different stations.(Hip Hop, Country, Rock, etc…) The job of the board op is to go from room to room every 30 mins or so to A) Make sure the music and commercials in the computer match what's listed in a paper log
I stepped into the station one Sunday morning around 6am to get a head start on morning show production for the week. I popped my head into the gospel station to speak to the board op. He'd been out all night being a "late night ambassador" to a rapper who was in town.
He was in the process of adding songs from the paper log to the computer. Now, it’s important to point out that though these were four different radio stations, in these days, radio stations stored ALL MUSIC on the same server.
You had to play CLOSE attention to the songs when you added them. The Board Op was attempting to add a song by gospel artist Louise ‘Candy’ Davis. Our convo distracted him, he added ‘Candy’ by 8 Ball & MJG to the gospel playlist. We continued our convo as he walked out the room.
He never looked at the screen. Neither did I.
The computer had frozen. In the event of a computer freeze the system automatically repeats the last song it played until a Board Op comes and restarts the system.
For the next 4 hours sweet old black women expecting to hear the usual Sunday morning church sermons heard ….

“I'm creepin low in a flip, flop drop
Top 'Stang, leanin to the left, gold Dayton's on that thang
I'm the MJG, pimp tight
Put it to the floor, 5-0 swang a right"
"(Chorus)
Just like candy (candy)
Just like candy
Its the same feeling (looks good to me)"

This went on for 4 hrs straight commercial free. We got caught up doing other stuff and never came back in the gospel station to check the board to make sure everything was smooth.
We corrected the mistake and swore each other to secrecy. The bosses never found out, but for the next week old black people were calling the gospel station requesting “that song about candy”.
In August of 2003, Candy by 8-Ball and MJG was one of the top 5 requested gospel songs in the city of Birmingham. And to this day, my bosses never knew why.
The old gospel women just assumed it to be Gospel Rap. And to be fair the song is catchy. The entire song is about having a car w/ Candy coated paint. but the old gospel crowd thought "candy" was the spirit of God shining down on you and making your skin glisten. Honest mistake
Still a banger all these years later.

That board op, @YoungDilleon went on to become one the premiere Radio talents in Radio. And still is. Ive done ok myself and radio played a large part in my growth. but this week in August 2003, we both almost lost our damn jobs. Fin.
