Johannes Itten (1888-1967), the first artistic director of the famous Bauhaus school—which didn't even do architecture until 8 years in—seems to have been an insane cult leader. These are the people whose work rules how our homes and cities are built today, 99 years later. (Curl)
Bauhaus was a school of arts and crafts that taught almost no arts and little crafts, and their in later years much talked about school of architecture was completely absent. What they did teach however was a colorful potpourri of sects, cults, theosophy and occultism.
The mysticism didn't last long. In 1922, after being called out by proper black shirts, Gropius abandoned his utopian ideas and went full bolshevik: his new hires: 'infrared': they had left the USSR and Hungary as their revolutions weren't radical enough: Kandinsky, Moholy-Nagy.
