1) I’ve re-written the start of this tweet storm 5/6 different ways, but it ends up the same: the #NXVIM cult has so many separate lines of inquiry that it’s too early to really understand it. But some themes are starting to emerge, please follow along.

1) We love to look at Joe McCarthy as a horrible guy that created the Red Scare in the 40s and 50s.

1) There's a coordinated effort to prevent @POTUS being aired live tonight. This is a manufactured debate being spread by the mockingbird media, but its fake. They wouldn't dare. #QAnon
2) First talking points were centered around equal time, then it morphed into a 'do we really have to do this' and then into this bizarre notion that "fact checking" should be done in real time...

Though last week's discussion was fruitful and evocative, @i_nurmi points out that we skirted around and didn't really arrive at the ultimate question of why these classes are important, and how we convince our students these are important.
A big problem here is the perception of Latin as a "prestige language." A cohort mentions a panel at CANE last year with pushback against Latin as ID'd as "prestige Latin"; one panel speaker gave e.g. of students finding value in the language *because* of this identity...

On the Stanford Prison Experiment (SPE) bombshell:

I also attended Haslam's excellent talk and heard the tapes; indeed, they’re shocking. It's clear the SPE was an elaborate production; "subjects" were coached on how to act and informed about the intended results.

BUT, I don’t think it’s scientific fraud in the typical sense.

The SPE was never considered to be scientific. It’s typically presented in classrooms as a demonstration, not an experiment, and as a notorious case of ethical malfeasance.

Also, the SPE report was not published in a reputable psychology journal; it came out in the obscure Naval Research Review. Apparently, peer review did its job.

Thank you. I used to teach across the street from Lafayette Park here in LA - the park where MS-13 got its start in the 1980's when it was just a small group of frightened kids who wanted protection from the other local gangs. I've known literally dozens of MS-13 gang members. 1/
Just like with every single dehumanized segment of society ever in history, the bad apple fallacy is in play here. Yes, members of MS have done some truly horrifyingly horrible things....

...but there are nearly 50k members worldwide, 30k here in the US and the vast majority 2/
are not only human (they're all human, even the horrible ones, btw), but are generally decent human beings who have been forced by circumstance to join a criminal enterprise and are still involved bc they are trapped. 3/
