HEY TWITTER. I wanted to talk about something I'm calling Youngest Common Denominator.
CITY OF GHOSTS has been out for a week now, and I've been overwhelmed by the reception, but I've noticed a group of voices, most of them my adult readers, who feel the book is not long enough, not as detailed as ADSOM, etc.
I want nothing more than for my readers to read across my books, across genre and audience. BUT it's also really important to understand that when I'm writing MG--Middle Grade--my primary goal is to make the books as enjoyable as possible for the Youngest Common Denominator.
This is less of an issue with my YA, because my YA audience has always skewed adult, but with MG, while I want nothing more than for adults to read and enjoy the books, your enjoyment is a bonus. The enjoyment of my 10-13 year-old audience is the priority.
I know how much I owe my adult audience. I wouldn't be here without you. I depend on your support to be able to branch out into younger audiences. Just keep in mind the YCD of the work you're reading.
