Two Presidents died on this day. Modest men from the Midwest, each had been VP for just a few months before ascending to the top job. Harry Truman, the 33d POTUS (1945-53), died in 1972; Gerald Ford, the 38th (1974-77) in 2006

(Thread) Earlier, I shared an old letter my grandpa wrote about the occupation of #Japan. The response was so overwhelming I searched for (& found) an interview with my grandma on the same subject.

Today, on the anniversary of the formal end of #WWII, I’ll share some excerpts:
(2/9) Some background on my grandmother first:
・Born/raised in Yokohama
・Before the war, family was well-to-do merchants, but the imperial gov’t took all their wealth for the war effort
・English speaker from young age
・Got a job as a switchboard operator for Occupation forces
(3/9) More background:
・”Met” my grandfather when he made a call through her switchboard
・Started their life together overcoming the legal & social taboos of their love
・She preferred to tell stories rather than write them down, so I transcribed our conversation 13 years ago

North Korean identity has always cohered in relation to antagonistic or threatening "others." Post-WWII it was Japan, then the US and South Korean "puppets" became the main threat but Japan remained an eternal enemy. 1/
That historical context can't be dismissed when North Korea does something like a visible attempt to bridge relations with Japan, a country that North Korean state media was savaging as recently as last week. 2/
How I understand North Korean identity--and the deep gut-level feeling of antipathy that many Koreans (North and South) have toward Japan--makes me quite skeptical of a North Korean bridge-building effort toward Japan. And yet geopolitical exigencies make it plausible. 3/

Harry Anderson has died. I first met him through our mutual friend Turk Pipkin, and we became friendly during my coverage of post-Katrina New Orleans, where he owned a bar, Oswald's, and tried to help the city recover. variety.com/2018/tv/news/h…
Oswald's was where I'd hang out after knocking off from my day's reporting. Harry had made his club a hangout for magicians. He performed there, astonishing tricks and feats of mental agility. After hours, he was good company. I did not always walk steadily back to my hotel.
In the early days after the storm, he turned the bar into a gathering place for people desperate to rebuild the city. nytimes.com/2006/02/18/art…
