The story of how Italian fashion tycoon Brunello Cucinelli spent his own money to revitalize and rebuild a 12th century hamlet in Umbria is pretty amazing. Key points to follow... reuters.com/article/us-ita…
Instead of building his corporation in some big city like everyone else who makes it big, he returned to his native village and brought the corporation with him, lifting the whole region with it. (quotes from a 2009 article)
Cucinelli has the most holistic view in a corporate leader I have ever seen. “If you’re a young guy at the discoteca and you’re trying to pick up a girl and you say, ‘I’m a patternmaker at Cucinelli, I work with my hands,’ it’s not very sexy. There had to be some added value.”
The way he looks out for the village, and the way the village trusts him to work in their best interests is nothing short of phenomenal.
The office design is revolutionary: instead of a modern purpose built all inclusive monolith building impossible to reuse, the corporation is spread out over 14 regular village houses, each built to be one day turned into a family home. This is epic levels of long term thinking.
"It is a mistake, he says, for mankind to try to rule the world only through science, without paying attention to the soul."
More long term thinking: "The school of Solomeo provides classes in seven different subjects: four in tailoring, and Horticulture, Gardening and Masonry." investor.brunellocucinelli.com/en/a-humanisti…
Quite a place to have your office, don't you think?
Solomeo's culture festival looks like something out of this world. The town I live in could easily fit 30 000 Solomeos and we have nothing like this. filarmonicasolomeo.it/en/
We need more people and places like this. Solomeo, Italy.
"Here's your new home, your office is a three minute walk up the alley, facing the fields. Enjoy."
Good photos of the family, the village, the company. robbreport.com/style/fashion/…
"Brunello Cucinelli desingers hard at work inside the brand’s new headquarters." Open windows. I can't even remember when I last saw open windows in an office setting.
"If you are feeling stiff from working sitting down all day the company vineyard could do with help before the big harvest..."
"Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, never merely as a means to an end, but always at the same time as an end.”
— Immanuel Kant
A very interesting interview with Brunello Cucinelli. pi.co/brunello-cucin…
