Charging individual North Korean government hackers as individuals is a human rights issue. Assuming the intrusions have been correctly attributed to Park (not a given), unlike me, he likely had zero choice in his actions. This is not okay. 1/n

People living in North Korea don't get a choice when the government comes calling. There are countless stories of atrocities where whole families are imprisoned (or worse) for defying the orders of the government. We know what would have happened if Park refused to hack Sony. 2/n
Park's only crime is his talent. Because he was selected to be educated in Computer Science (probably based on aptitude), his trajectory was set. Now that he faces indictment, his trajectory is likely set too. Park will never be turned over to the US for trial. 3/n
Long before DPRK extradites him, they'll make him disappear. If he tries to defect, the DPRK government will imprison or kill his family. Some will say we must prosecute crime "to send a message." But what message is being sent? I think it's "we don't care about his life." 4/n
Look at the nations where we're charging government hackers. Russia, Iran, China, and now DPRK. Notice a pattern? It's a history of human rights abuses. Do you really think that more well-mannered nations aren't hacking? If so, I've got bad news for you. 5/n
Another thing those countries share in common is that they will never extradite their people to the US to face those charges. In terms of justice, these charges are entirely symbolic. 6/n
Do you think we haven't found other nation's hackers in our networks? I bet we have. But we have other diplomatic means to handle those issues. We must stop conflating criminal action and diplomatic action. It absolutely will come back to bite us. 7/n
I don't say thing lightly: if you're involved in this particular set of charges, you have blood on your hands. I had a choice in my participation in government hacking operations. You have a choice to participate in these actions. Park did not. Period. 8/8

I certainly don't agree with everything in this thread, but it is very thought provoking nonetheless. I tell clients regularly that cyber security IS warfare if APT is in your threat model. We often fight nation state hackers with nearly infinite resources by deploying a CEH. 1/n
This obviously doesn't work. When you step back and look at resources that APT groups have, it's obvious they can comrpomise almost any organization. My favorite example is the China/Bit9 example. Picture being an attacker who can't get into a top tier target. 2/n
Now imagine that you think "Bit 9 is standing in our way, so we'll 'just' go comrpomise them." Um, that's a moonshot. Ask yourself:
1. What kind of organization dedicates resources to moonshots?
2. How many moonshots do we not know about?
3. How valuable was that target?

I'm writing a new blog post but I need some help. We have a problem in the tech industry with consent vs. informed consent. Problems with confusing the two are not unique to infosec. Medicine has been practiced for millennia, but informed consent is at best ~50 years old. 1/n
Legalese terms of service can't be comprehended by a large percentage of a user base. Even if you understand what is being collected, do you understand how it will be used? A patient can't give informed consent without a discussion of risk. 2/n
Doctors don't routinely downplay risk in a procedure. This comes from two sources:
1. Liability
2. In most cases (electives are a counter-example), the doctor has a product (the procedure) the patient needs

These do not hold true in the technology field. 3/n

Mansfield is a sponsor of "Labour Against the Witch Hunt", which as far as I can tell entirely denies the antisemitism issue in Labour. It's website refers repeatedly to the "false anti-Semitism smear", they want the Labour Compliance Unit to be shut down labouragainstthewitchhunt.org/about/
Nb. You may remember that in Geoffrey Robertson QC's opinion on the IHRA definition there was initially a few major errors including that all Jews in the world are given Israeli citizenship "whether they like it or not". Similar to Mansfield's point

North Korea has agreed to return just 200 sets of US service member remains. BUT …“Defense Department estimates there are up to 5,300 sets of US service member remains still somewhere in North Korea. A total of 7,697 personnel remain unaccounted for from the Korean War.”
1. It was US decision to deploy nuclear weapons in South Korea in 1958 that prompted North Korean government to ask Soviet Union and China for help in developing nuclear weapons (both refused). Soviet Union however agreed to help N Korea develop a peaceful nuclear energy program.
2. Eventually this technology base developed into North Korea’s clandestine nuclear weapons program, leading to its nuclear tests.

So why did the US deploy nukes in South Korea in the first place, which triggered this nuclear arms race on the Korean Peninsula?

A denuclearized North Korea is a goal we all share. America must lead the way in pursuing dogged diplomacy, nuclear nonproliferation and global peace. The summit in Singapore had the potential to be a crucial step forward in that process. (1/3)

After 70 years of imperial/neoliberal indoctrination the web of lies is so obviously absurde (9/11, Skripal, WH = ISIS, etc.), that it is dissoluting. The empathetic humanity connects, closes ranks and sends their eternal psychopathic rulers and their lackeys into nowhere land.
The "evil empire" is a lifelong three year old child. I certainly loved my children at that age too, however only because they created not only a surreal mess, but also made steady progress.

A great documentary about psychopathy and society:
The elite invented "democracy" to protect them from the empathetic people. The media are their means for misleading the people sedated by "democracy". This is definitely a bad thing since the people have become educated and the elite almost totally insane.
