The video of my @EuroPython 2018 keynote is now live: "How to Ignore Most Startup Advice and Build a Decent Software Business" ✨

For everyone who's been asking for more readings along the same lines, here are some classics (thread)

1) It's hard to believe this is from 2003. @spolsky (founder of @FogCreek and @StackOverflow) nails the root incentive mismatch. It's the same today, but worse: founders need high median outcome, VC needs high mean outcome. joelonsoftware.com/2003/06/03/fix…
2) "Reconsider" (2015). @dhh's humble claim is that you should think carefully about what you want and why you want it. Most founders want control over their lives and their work. The startup playbook gives you the opposite, with a cultish veneer. m.signalvnoise.com/reconsider-41a…
3) @math_rachel of @fastdotai recaps common founding problems to avoid, especially for AI startups (2018). Pay attention to what you're trying to achieve and what will help achieve it. Your objective isn't identical to the objective of academic research. fast.ai/2018/01/08/sta…
4) Investors want to be thought leaders. Of course. And they want you to feel a coward for building a "lifestyle business". Of course. But any business is a risk – and a questionable lifestyle choice! @jendziura of @GetBullish captures this well (2011): getbullish.com/2011/04/bullis…
5) It's profoundly weird that making a profit is now seen as an unorthodox business maneuver. @jasonfried outlines many of the advantages (2017). This should not be the ~*galaxy brain*~ take! m.signalvnoise.com/why-we-choose-…
6) Finally, we haven't worked with @indievc but their terms look pretty good. It's not impossible to find investors interested in solid businesses. But remember that investment is a transaction – if someone "just loves helping founders", run the other way. indie.vc
