THREAD
1) I listed to @JoeRogan Experience podcast interview with Elon Musk, and trust me, Joe’s publicity stunt of handing a lit joint to @elonmusk is the least interesting thing in a 2.5 hour interview.
2) More interesting, for example, are these eloquent and clear statements from @elonmusk about why he builds cars, stating the plain physics of the matter with an engineer’s dispassion:
3) “Electric cars are important. Solar energy is important. Stationary storage of energy is important.”
4) “It’s important that we accelerate the transition to sustainable energy and that’s why it matters whether electric cars happen sooner or later. We’re really playing a crazy game here with the atmosphere and the oceans.”
5) “We’re taking vast amounts of carbon from deep underground and putting this into the atmosphere. This is crazy. We should not do this. This is very dangerous.”
6) “The bizarre thing is that obviously we are going to run out of oil in the long run. There is only so much oil we can mine and burn.”
7) “It’s tautological: we must have a sustainable transport and energy infrastructure in the long term, so we know that’s the end point. So why run this crazy experiment...”
8) “...where we take trillions of tons of carbon from underground and put it in the atmosphere and oceans. This is an insane experiment.”
9) “This is the dumbest experiment in human history. Why are we doing this? This is crazy. The momentum to sustainable energy is too slow.”
10) “There’s 2.5 billion cars and trucks in the world. If you could snap your fingers and all the cars and trucks (sold) were electric, it would still take 25 years.”
11) “There’s an inherent subsidy in any oil burning device. Any power plant or car is fundamentally consuming the carbon capacity of the oceans and atmosphere.”
Ended thread: but thanks @elonmusk for crystal clarity. I also will think more about your idea that AI will inevitably not be within human control, and I’ll ask @ramez for some things to read on that topic.
