Corbyn has said so many things over the course of his career that it really isn't necessary for anyone to guess his opinions on Jews or Israel. Let's take a look, his Zionist irony comments were made at a PRC conference with Daud Abdullah & @ifamericansknew & Alan Hart
But in the scheme of things that's nothing. He has this OCD thing about making distinctions between different kinds of Jews, even when his brothers in Hamas make no such distinction; note the below from the Hamas Charter as compared with Corbyn's own comments
Implicit in the argument that conflating Jews and Zionists is something negative is the idea that Zionists or supporters of Israel are fair game for attack. At the launch of the Chakrabarti Report, a report that whitewashed the issue of Labour antisemitism, Corbyn said:
But the Jews were left wondering...what if I'm a wealthy Jew who supports Israel? Does that mean antisemitism against me is allowed? What if I'm a poor Jew and I support Netanyahu? Does that make me fair game for attack by your acolytes? What if I'm a Zionist Jew?
According to polling by the Institute for Jewish Policy Research 82% of Jews feel Israel plays either an important part in their Judaism or a central and important part in it. Corbyn has chosen to ignore this fact. jpr.org.uk/documents/Comm…
The Times reported that Corbyn wrote a statement to Labour’s National Executive Committee for their debate over whether to accept the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition into their code of conduct. Note these two parts:
the first sentence stands except for when it is contradicted by the second. Perhaps it’s worth looking at some of the “discriminatory impact” he mentions regarding Israel’s foundation. For example Hebron in 1929, Martin Gilbert writes:
It's worth reading the full story of Hebron as it places the desire of Israelis, including those who were ethnically cleansed from Hebron to return as soon as they could. In 1948 even the Jews living near Hebron were wiped out
The language Corbyn used to describe the “circumstances surrounding its [Israel’s] foundation” hardly do justice to the Jews during their war for independence nor do they take into account the fact that wherever the Jews were defeated in that war they were ethnically cleansed.
But Corbyn seems to lack the empathy necessary to think about casualties sustained by the Jews while defending themselves against armies hellbent on killing them all. All he can say is this:
It's difficult to overstate how wrong Corbyn's version is. Jews didn’t “marry up” with Zionism they were desperate to get to Palestine to escape the place of their genocide and strive for the autonomy their suffering made clear to the world they needed in their ancestral homeland
For their efforts the British locked them up in concentration camps in Atlit in Palestine and Cyprus where they remained until Israel’s independence. On arrival in the nascent Israel they had to don uniform and rifle because the country was under attack from all sides.
Corbyn isn't finished there though
Large arms shipments were sent by the USSR to the countries surrounding Israel from the late 1940s through to the late 1970s and after. Before the Six Day War Israel was outnumbered and outgunned by her enemies combined & by some of them individually. He must know this.
