In this case, the messenger they needed to discredit was @SenFeinstein, because she is on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and had the letter from the accuser, Christine Blasey Ford.
Here's the timeline of the allegations:
Early July: Christine Blasey Ford contacted @washingtonpost via tipline, and her Congresswoman.
Late July: she sent a letter to @SenFeinstein via her Congresswoman.
She requested the letter be kept confidential.
