How's this for an idea; the story still has the element of people debating over the issues of immigration and what not but it's toned the fuck down and the whole thing isn't 'white peopill bad, woek peapill gud' type of deal.

The main kid is still moving into Arizona but his parents aren't massive stereotypes as presented in the book. They just want the best for their son even if they are moving to a place that even they are unsure of but hey, you have to move where the job is.

The kid is still mixed and is wary about fitting in and there is still the 'X' kid and Julinita and her 'gang' of 'woke' friends. Julinita or whatever the fuck her name is, hate each other but it's given a bit more background as to why from both sides.

X does have a racist dad but his views don't actually line up with what his father thinks. X is mostly following what his dad says out of his own shit experience a few years back due in part to his own bullying but in his hearts of hearts, he DOESN'T agree with what his dad-

-says but mostly follows out of fear of being rejected given his father is his only family left. So he meets with our main and after the main has a bad encounter with Luchador kid, X is the one who helps him and they hit it off, both thinking 'Oh thank GOD, SOmeone I can trust'

Julinita only makes things bad when she starts opening her mouth about the X kid and starts the whole shit about the main kid being racist too because he was seen with X. Julininta still asks him to 'prove he's not racist' but rather than having him have that freak out-

-in class, the main kid freezes; what does this question mean and how the fuck is he supposed to respond. Julininta keeps hounding him about his race and to prove he's not racists and our main kid is just stammering away because she's being a bitch and egging him on.

X comes over and sees what's going on and tells Julinita to back off but she gets angry at him about how he 'brought in another one' which in her terms is 'another nazi' which makes X angry.

He knows his rep around the school and he hates it but even he doesn't know what-

-to say but Main then says he's not racist because he's half Mexican which surprises everyone not for his race but how he just shouted it. Julinta gets this smug look on her face towards X and EXPECTS him to go off but he gets angry in silence and walks away. Main asks what-

-happened and Julinita tells him that X is 'a nazi and his whole family are nazi' (which isn't true even if his dad is still racist) which breaks Main's heart because he TRUSTED X and as he walks away, X is upset as well. He knew people were EXPECTING him to react badly-

-and wouldn't have believed him otherwise so he just lost a friend to some needless drama.

Meanwhile, there are monsters getting past the border which people do at first mistake as people but once the killing starts, it becomes clear they're dealing with some supernatural shit.

And the killings are so strange that the entire town is split on what exactly is happening. We have people who think the killings are brought in by people crossing the border, people who think it's just crime within the neighborhood and we have that faction that thinks it's-

-monsters and the super natural. In our 'gang', the Asian chick is the one who guessed right the first time since she's someone who loves monsters and mythology so she guessed it was the chupacabra first but she is shot down by some of her family and Julininta who thinks-

-it's 'people like X'. Granted, to give her reason to be so angry, there are legit racist in the town spouting out shit but Julinta's problem is that she's acting EXACTLY like the racists she hates by judging everyone by skin color, hence why she thought out main was racist-

-because he didn't look 'Mexican enough' for her. And Main is learning just how things go in her little group. At first he thinks he feels welcome but you can tell by the way the other kids act, there's sort of this obligation they feel they have to Julinita (again, I can't spell

-her name) and it's not exactly as if they're having fun. Even the Luchador kids finally takes off his masks while she's gone and states that he only wears it because she got on him for not being 'prideful' enough towards his heritage despite how stupid it is.

Julinita has sort of set herself as the 'leader' of this group but all she's doing is bossing them around and keeping them from really enjoying things since she makes every tiny thing about race and some other shit. The kids hang out with her because she's made them-

-feel worried about being ostracized again since she's created this idea that without her, they'll be beaten by all the 'nazis' in town, with X and his dad being pointed as the number one threat.

Nazi population in town: 0

Main just wants to make friend and enjoy himself and sees X in the halls of schools. They both have this moment where they want to say something but the divide has already formed and they walk away from each other. Later, main sneaks out of his house to clear his head-

-and as he's coming back from the little gas station, he hears what he thinks is sobbing on the side of the road. He goes closer, thinking that it's a little girl when WHOOSH!

It's a fucking chupacabra!

Main is getting attacked by this monster and it seems that no matter how loudly he screams, NO ONE CAN HEAR HIM. He's rushing for hsi life when he sees TWO MORE of the nasties following up to him. He's panicked, bleeding, and thinking that he's only been in town a week and is-

-going to die when FWOOSH!

The smallest of the monsters screams as it is knocked back and something explodes in its eyes. Main looks back to see sparks flying from the burning corpse of the monster, the other two looking at it and finds that it was a firework.

-flare type weapon and the Asian chick was the one who shot it off. Main rushes towards her in her truck and the speed off, the Asian girl telling him to drop more bombs out the window which does enough to burn the other two chupacabras back and send them back towards-

-the darkness of the desert.

When they're in teh clear, Asian chick is going on 'I KNEW IT! I KNEW IT!' and explains to the Main that she had a feeling NO HUMAN was possible of the murders and it HAD to be a monster. Our main is just 'WHAT?'

The Asian chick is so excited but then starts to realize that even if the two did see the monsters, they still have no real proof to show of what happened but given they're teenagers, they tell their other friends first. Luchador kid is on the fence, thinking they're pranking-

-him but Julinita is still under the idea that PEOPLE did the killings and tells the Asian chick to shut up. Main goes in to defend her and Julinita gets on him as well, starting a massive fight between the two. This escalates until Main can't take it anymore and leaves.

Meanwhile X is contemplating how to talk to his dad since the things that are happening at school are still bothering him and he knows that even if he loves his dad, he can't follow him on this. In the living room, his dad is watching TV and reports of a 'burned body'

-are played, his dad hammering it home even further he thinks its an 'illegal' who killed someone else. X hides back in his room in shame because he doesn't want it to be true and he doesn't want his father to think this way. HE doesnt' want to think this way.

Things are only getting worse for our Main. He feels like an outside again as no one wants to be his friend and Julinta only made it worse by spreading around the rumor that Main is a racists. The Asian chick gets on her for doing this but again, Julinta thinks she's in the right

Main comes home only to hear his mom screaming. He rushes into the backyard to find that she is being attacked by a chupacabra! He beats it off with a shovel and calls 911. His mother is rushed to the hospital but is unconcious due to shock so she can't back up her son-

-when he tells his dad what happened. No one believes him that it was a monster.

Except....

Main goes back to Asian chick but has to hide outside her house as not to alarm her parents. They meet at the window and she sneaks him in and he tells her that HE saw the monster as well and they need to do something but what?

These chupacabra seem to number in the HUNDREDS and given their strength, human power alone isn't much. But the two know they have to do something.

Meanwhile, X is in his room, asleep when he hears scratching at his window. He wakes up just as a chupacabra BUSTS through the-

-glass and begins attacking him. He's home alone and doesn't know how to defend himself against this monster as it keeps clawing for him. He finally just grabs a liter and a can of spray paint and LIGHTS the mother fucker on fire as it rushes out to the garage-

-smoldering in a burnt heap.

Our main gang gets back together but without Julinta, Main, Asian chick and Luchador kid talking about going in, with both boys going 'The fuck are you talking about?!'

Asian chick has a feeling that maybe there's-

-a den or some sort of gathering of these monsters near the border which explains the amount of bodies on both sides, Main makes the suggestion of calling in a 'professional' but what PROFESSIONAL can deal with monsters people don't believe exist?

Asian chick really has no clue and just concludes that maybe if they just find a way to SCARE them away, somewhere away from people on both sides of the way, EVERYONE will be safe. They just have to do something to stop the killings on both borders since EVERYONE is in danger.

With a BAD plan made, the group prepare to go out but they are stopped by X. Remembering what Julinta told them, they are very hesitent to even speak to him but he speaks up first, telling the group not to worry since 'he believes'

And the throws the-

-burnt body of the chupacabra at their feet.

And it's only getting worse.

Soon, swarms of chupacabra are starting to come in and attack and kill people in the small town. Juilinta's family is attacked but they manage to get out. Those who manage to make it out go to the school-

-which is now on lockdown to keep others safe. The other kids from the group make it in to see if people they know are alright but when Julinta sees that her 'friends' are back with Main and X, she flips out. She goes on the attack of them all and accuse them of abandoing her-

-but as they are tired of being bossed around and made to feel helpless from her words, Main finally tells her to drop the shit and see what's happening. They are being attacked and not by the people she claimed, but by ACTUAL monsters.

The kids already know that some ill-informed adults are still arguing that it couldn't be monsters and Main makes the point that Julinta sounds EXACTLY like them; massively informed on their own hate so see the real danger of what's going on. Julinta denies this but the more-

-they argue the more chupacabra start to gather around. What's worse is that X's dad is arguing about being with 'the illegals' which Julinta uses as ammo as to why they still shouldn't trust X who just wants to help everyone else out. Now, a bunch of actual racists are-

-blabbering on and on about shit that doesn't matter as the chupacabra break through the barriers. Once they see that the monsters are in, Main and the other kids now that they have to fight. Main just tells everyone to SHUT THE FUCK UP and for once, people stop.

They stop, see that there are bigger things to worry about and those who aren't caught up in trying to point the finger at who get off their asses and begin ti fight. AND IT IS EVERYONE.

Black, White, Hispanic, legal, illegal. Who the fuck cares. They have to fight in it together to protect themselves. In the melee X's dad gets injured and the Luchador kid comes to his recuse, throwing his masks in the face of one of the monsters and then throwing it.

Julinta also gets injured but when X offers her help, she refuses. He looks broken by this as Julinta rushes back into a corner. Soon those seeking shelter run from teh school back into the air, chasing back the chupacabra who are fighting back as well but with everyone actually

-FIGHTING BACK, they are able to defend themselves but they don't stop at the border. They know there are people on the other side who are in danger as well and rather than just letting the monsters take THEM over, its's like the entire area just comes together to fight back

The Asian chick was right that there was a grouping of chupacabra in the area and the citizens from both sides find a way to send them back into their 'nest' deep within the hidden depths of a cave. The chupacabra escape, so its' not exactly as if they defeated them but they won-

-this battle.

Sometime later, Main's mom is out of the hospital and is glad to see her son looks happier and is doing better in school. He doesn't talk much about the attack but states a lot happened whole she was in the hospital.

X has a talk with his dad, telling him that while he loves him he doesn't agree with his view on other people and it's on thing he can't follow him with. Its a moment where we know that the dad isn't going to change his views completly but at the same time he didn't throw out his

-son and vis versa. X knows that he can't let hate overtake him and so on. As for the other kids, we find out that Julinta moved back with her dad 'to the coast' because she 'couldn't take it in the town' and without her, Asian Chick and Luchador kid are much more-

-comfortable with themselves. It ends with the four kids, Main, X, Asian Chick and Luchador kid (who doesn't wear the stupid mask, just a shirt) are preparing themselves for a run.

What type of run?

They're off to protect both sides from chupacabras and other monsters.
