Thread/ A script I am getting weary of seeing: Christian A says something morally deplorable. Christian B responds with reasonable revulsion. Christian A smugly mocks Christian B for being a "virtue signaler."
Jesus was definitely against virtue signaling. Back in the day He just called it hypocrisy. But when He said in Matthew 6 to "take care not to do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them, as the hypocrites do ..." He wasn't preaching against charitable deeds.
When He said not to pray long-winded, public prayers like the hypocrites, He wasn't saying that you should stop praying.
He didn't release His listeners from the obligation to do good simply because some people were doing good in order to please men instead of God. The point was that a truly righteous person orients himself to God, not man. That should result in GREATER virtue.
I hate false morality and hypocrisy as much as the next person. But consider well whether you are mocking the man-oriented signal, or just mocking the virtue.
