You might think I'm journalist. Unless you've ever read anything I've written. I'm just a wonk. Literally a journalism school drop-out. But I do know how to read & I know how the world works & I will tell you this: journalists are stepping in where other leaders are failing us.
They are heroes today as they always have been. But I think that someday when we look back at this period in US history, we will see it as a golden age of journalism, when the checks & balances in our system didn't work but these tireless, courageous reporters & writers saved us.
I read a story today about how President Trump bullied ABC's Cecilia Vega. But it was wrong. He only attempted to bully her. She could not be bullied. Just like the others he attacks as enemies when they are really the ones protecting us from real enemies, foreign & domestic.
The NYT expose on Trump family finances is another example. Like the great work by @Fahrenthold at the Washington Post and countless other stories that required unglamorous, relentless digging, doing the math, putting the puzzle pieces together it is antidote to the diseases...
...that have infected our system: The campaigns against truth, science, history and math, the cover-ups and the enabling, the sycophancy and politicization of everything. @realDonaldTrump, @senatemajldr and others can try to suppress the truth about their crimes and agendas.
But every day we know it is not going to work. The FBI investigation of Kavanaugh may be a sham--it appears to be one now. But we know the story will not end there. We know that reporters will keep reporting it. We know that as they have so far, they will drive new inquiries.
It sounds grand but we have this special need for champions of the truth right now & for all the flaws of the modern media, the echo chambers & cage-match like atmosphere of some cable news networks, the lies sold by the real purveyors of fake news at places like Fox & Breitbart,
We know that there are others who are working around the clock to stand up for us, for the truth, for facts and for shedding light where those in power want only shadows and darkness. We should be very grateful for them. I know I am.
