Thread about Retrieval- a thread explaining one way you can do it. Hopefully, low effort. It is high impact!

Start every lesson with a RECALL check. Don’t call it RECAP- that implies you reminding. Recall suggests them, the students brining back knowledge. Check. Not a test.
Check, as you don’t take in scores and log them. High frequency. Low stakes.
All checks have the same format and same structure. To enable routine based learning and allow you to then start your lesson.
5 questions
5 minutes (timer on the board)
Answer in full sentences
If answer unknown, leave space to fill in answer AFTER writing question down
Go through answers and either
TICK
CORRECT or
AMEND
Ensure misconceptions are addressed and reference when and how we have covered the learning before.
Start your lesson.
Doesn’t have to always be written.
Could include:
Equations
Dates
Pictures
Physical movement
Questions shouldn’t be limited to recall of facts. Application of knowledge important too.
It’s ok to repeat questions across recall checks.
Most importantly there must be at least one question you KNOW all students will be able to answer, to give them an I dedicate access / step into your lesson.
When checking their answers use this to develop further into your current lesson or previous learning by using probing questions or add build challenge questioning technique.

Don’t use a recall check2ascertain whether students know something before you’re about to teach it.
Ultimately I wouldn’t advocate planning these in advance as they should be class specific. But a bank of questions would be useful.
You could have them as stickers or multiple choice. But for ease. 5 quick questions that include last lesson/week/term/topic is best.
