So I watched Athiefku’s spokesman performance claiming enormous economic benefits from 16 years of @OfficialPDPNig misrule of Nigeria. Lets use this thread to clear the air on some things...@OfficialAPCNg @GMBSupport @ogundamisi @toluogunlesi #TrackrecordAtiku
1. There is this persistent bogus claim that OBJoke gave Nigeria GSM and the new economy alongside the jobs that came with it. This is a lie. GSM licensing round was started by Abacha. A revolution was ongoing around the world. It was going to happen anyway. #TrackrecordAtiku
2. Now, what that government did well, was focusing on announcing Nigeria’s arrival at the global scene. For this, the first term was a travel term for Obasanjo. We remember those foreign trips he was criticized for and for which he delivered debt forgiveness.Did Athiefku travel?
3. Now lets look at the dead cat bounce of an economy that Nigeria was in 1999 and what really led to its revival: aside from GSM, it was crude oil price recovery. From $25 to over $75 as at 2007 I.Adj. This ensured near tripling of government revenue and spend.
4. Now speaking of government spending, this government also expanded deficit and the public service ensuring that at the end of @OfficialPDPNig term, 120% of revenue was being spent on salaries, this was an economic disaster and no record to be proud of. #TrackrecordAtiku
5. My friends @OfficialPDPNig like to speak of economic indices, but facts are sacred. They inherited a country with 6.5% inflation rate in 1999 and took it to 18.9% in 2000, remained high at this level up to 17.9% in 2006 and only came down to 8.9% on exit. #TrackrecordAtiku
6. Now lets see the chart, see how much the poor suffered due to @OfficialPDPNig reckless spending ? Inflation destroys value of money and this is what you get under reckless corruption and spending #TrackrecordAtiku
7. Now, the expansion of government which is something Nigeria will take a long time to recover from created the environment for partisan staffing of public service. Patronage is the word which institutionalized corruption #TrackrecordAtiku
8. This Patronage also saw the rise of Nigeria’s notoriety for corruption on international scene - aka Yahoo Yahoo driven by vain materialism and inequity of the rightist approach to governance that created a huge gap between rich and poor. #TrackrecordAtiku
9. The direct result of inequity is insecurity. Not only did OBJoke/Athiefku play ostrich to Nigeria’s enormous security challenges occasioned by long years of repressive military rule, they adamantly refused to reconfigure the poor structure they inherited #TrackrecordAtiku
10. There is no gainsaying that no brilliant economic policy can survive insecurity. From the political sharia crisis that OBJoke/Athiefku allowed to fester from 2000 which ultimately led to Boko Haram to endless ethnic crisis that led to ND Militancy - is the #TrackrecordAtiku
11. As at 2015, it was reported that 101,500 were murdered in ethnic clashes and militancy at the watch of @OfficialPDPNig from 1999. That is excluding the millions displaced and dead due to hunger and such. By 2015 , a tenth of our territory was lost. #TrackrecordAtiku
12. I mean don’t take my word for it, read this news item. @OfficialPDPNig specialized in killing Nigerians. Human lives meant nothing. It was all about money &acquisition for the connected & corrupt few that dominated a rightist govt of trickle down economics #TrackrecordAtiku
14. Of course this government of @MBuhari has taken a different stance. It has retooled the military bankrupted by @OfficialPDPNig , taken back all territories, secured our borders better and restored confidence in our security system to a large extent. Less people have died!
15. The @OfficialPDPNig like to talk about the Herdsman crisis. More people died from it under them than in the last three years. Obasanjo even invaded Malu village to quell one such crisis destroying the village of his COAS. What did they do? Mum! #TrackrecordAtiku
16. Now, not all spending is bad. As a leftist, I support spending on human and infrastructure development because they generate productivity and reduce inequality. This is what @OfficialAPCNg has done and @OfficialPDPNig did not do even under #TrackrecordAtiku
17. It was the choices @OfficialPDPNig made vs what @OfficialAPCNg is now doing that stands them out as failures. Instead of using the surplus generated by increased oil price and new GDP from telcos to build infrastructure and invest in education/health they looted & staffed
18. Now if bad spending was @OfficialPDPNig greatest offense it probably would have been forgivable. But their biggest crime was waste. They specialized in abandoned projects, it rose ten fold from 5 trillion at 1999 to 50 trillion on exit. Contractors cried #TrackrecordAtiku
19. To maximize their enormous capacity for damage, they also ensured they damaged the nation’s prime assets like the refineries instituting a subsidy regime that drained forex, encouraged import and cost us jobs #TrackrecordAtiku
20. Fuel importation in an oil producing nation was normalized while they rewarded cronies with juicy licenses to boost their patronage and ability for “sharing the money”. Nigeria bled. By 2015 we used 75% of our forex earnings to import #TrackrecordAtiku
21. But importation was not restricted to fuel. Basics such as food were also imported, as well as champagne and women of easy virtues. This @atiku himself actually specializes in with us boss. This was the Nigeria @MBuhari inherited. #TrackrecordAtiku
22. Okay, so you can support unhindered importation? Well how about cronyism the type @DoubleEph rails against? @OfficialPDPNig perfected it . From fuel license to cement monopolies. They created it.They bragged about billionaires created instead of job created #TrackrecordAtiku
23. Now, their biggest economics sin could be that if arithmetic. Okay so you won’t invest in social or physical infrastructure - at least you’d save right? No! They spent Nigeria to the bones. ECA was empty by 2015 and @nsia_nigeria underfunded. #TrackrecordAtiku
24. This ensured that when the storm hit in 2015, there was no rainy day Fund or bail out. @MBuhari had to be innovative to pay salaries & backlogs at FG and State levels. Currency dove by 50% as revenue shrunk by more as security and crude oil crisis mounted #TrackrecordAtiku
25. Now, all sins can be forgiven in economics is your people are better off. @OfficialPDPNig Oversaw the first major dip in Nigeria’s Human Devt Index ranking in 2006 under OBJoke/Athiefku. Graphs don’t lie! #TrackrecordAtiku
26. This was the death shot that triggered the enormous economic and security challenges Nigeria now faces today. With low productivity, greed culture, high import and wage bill, nosediving revenue and high inflation with no power and roads - Nigeria sacked em #TrackrecordAtiku
27. You may ask, what has @MBuhari done about it? Well you start from basics. You stabilize the economy. When in a hole - stop digging. This he has done. Even the biggest critique must admit. From currency policy to GDP growth & security, we are stable
28. Next he started doing more with less after plugging leakages with TSA and more focused anti-corruption war. Sukuk, the rails, @NSIP_NG are many ways he is doing what @OfficialPDPNig didn’t do while investing in @nsia_nigeria
29. He also saw to the refund of the debt that @OfficialPDPNig overpaid to the states for them to meet their obligations and avoid poor persons suffering even more. This whole spending more on our armed forces, our roads and in reducing our import bill on food #TrackrecordAtiku
30. @MBuhari may not have been perfect in everything, and I will be the first to admit. But with $94bn he has done what @OfficialPDPNig couldn’t do with $500bn plus in 16 years . Save. Invest in People. Build Infrastructure. Clean Up Nigeria & Make Her Safer. #TrackrecordAtiku
