2. Social movements and political movements bend the arc of the universe. People working together do it. And people working at cross purposes (like this Administration and it’s reactionary foot soldiers) can bend that arc back the other way.
3. The part of this I find most appalling is the Administration’s claim that this rollback is a response to the tyrannical threat posed by transgender people, as if the movement wants everyone to become transgender. 
4. Like most other rights-based social movements in US history, the claim is that “historical forms of discrimination have denied us the freedom to live the sort of self-determining lives all Americans should be able to access.”
5. But as with the abolitionist movement, women’s suffrage, the civil rights movement, etc. the opponents perceive the demand to be treated as rights-bearing citizens as an effort to *take something away from them*.
6. It’s hard for me to understand how MAGA folks who love the phrase “it’s a free country” can get so worked up about this transgender issue. No one is forcing you to do anything, other than treat them with civility and respect.
