The "caravan" is a clarifying moment in politics because many American voters have mixed feelings about immigration, DACA, etc. but only a tiny band of fringe fanatics thinks waving 10,000+ completely unvetted people across the border is a good idea.
It's the absurd distillation of open-borders arguments, like something hatched as a hypothetical example in a debate 30 years ago: what if a horde of angry foreigners waving the flags of their own countries marches across the border? Is even THAT okay with immigration softies?
The left manipulates Americans on immigrations with selective anecdotes and sob stories, which is an interesting illustration of their bitter cynicism because they simultaneously say Americans are cruel selfish racists but bank heavily on them falling for sob stories.
If Americans actually lived down to the ugly stereotypes lefties hold of them, the left's strategy for manipulating Americans on subjects like immigration wouldn't work at all. But lefties passionately believe those strategies DO work every time they're tried.
But not when it's this blatant, this obvious, this huge. Everything about this "caravan" is transparently phony and orchestrated. It makes a mockery of the popular image of desperate families seeking "asylum" from brutal oppression. The media manipulation is too clumsy.
And the question posed by the "caravan" is too extreme. Open-borders lunacy thrives in the shadows with happy talk about "dreamers" that dissolves when hard data is put on the table. You can trick Americans into ignoring data, but not stunning images of a 10,000-man invasion.
The open-borders crowd has absolutely no answer to any of the reasonable questions posed by this event: How do you vet these people? Why should American taxpayers be responsible for them? How would we keep track of them? How many more will come if they are let in?
And you don't need a carefully-executed political campaign to get American voters to ask those questions. They are the first thoughts popping into the heads of everyone who looks at the pictures.
The magnitude of the "caravan" also raises the question of why Americans should be responsible for the well-being of entire foreign populations. Open-borders lunacy only thrives when the numbers can be made to seem manageable and Americans feel bad about saying no.
College students today are marinated in a thick soup of "anti-colonialist" thinking. Well, the "caravan" IS colonialism. They're even flying foreign flags as they march toward the border. It doesn't matter if the invading force moves north or south.
Or the "caravan" could be seen as a refutation of anti-colonialist dogma, because if U.S. taxpayers are responsible for the entire population of Central America, then we damn well SHOULD take over their capitals and start running those countries better than the local kleptocrats.
You can't have it both ways. If the U.S. is not sovereign, then neither are Mexico, Guatemala, etc. If we're obliged to care for their citizens, then we have the right and duty to intervene in their affairs to guarantee their welfare and make dangerous migration unnecessary.
Mass migration across unforgiving terrain with the assistance of violent criminal gangs is the absolutely WORST way to address transnational welfare concerns. Outright colonialism would be vastly more humane for every population involved.
You can tell how terrified the left is of the questions raised by the "caravan" because DNC Media refuses to ask Democrats what they would do about the "caravan." There is no answer REMOTELY compatible with their ideology that wouldn't drive American voters away in droves.
The Left is reduced to mocking Americans with reasonable questions as panicky racists, which of course isn't going to endear voters to the Democrat Party either. But their best bet, their only play, is to scream "SHUT UP!" and hope they can still intimidate enough voters.
The "caravan" saga will motivate GOP voters, sure, but in sum the real danger for Democrats is that it makes their ideology look ridiculous to indies and even centrist Democrats. The Democrat Party cannot answer the first question anyone has, including most of their own voters.
And that very much includes Hispanic voters who lean Democrat, because the "caravan" makes a mockery of their own lawful immigration. Indulging illegals always does, but this is an insult - and a danger to their lives - that is too huge to be ignored. /end
