Brexiters stress Supreme Court verdict that consent in #GFA only re UK v UI vote & not Brexit. Insisted no devolved consent re Withdrawal Act. But now pretend that EU-Ireland #backstop terms for Brexit compatibility with GFA (as consented N&S) would violate consent principle.
"Belfast Agreement underpins NI's constitutional settlement"- DDavis. #Backstop to underpin #GFA North-South/all-island dimension & not undermine access to GB markets, UK cooperation or constitutional status. Concession of continued NI ambidextrous trade flows not control by EU!
If we cannot trust UK government & compulsive British-DUP Brexit imperatives to keep #backstop as written & agreed to reflect #GFA, what could we rely on without NI/N-S specific provisos? Certainly not a temporary UK compact to be distorted & discarded at their capricious whim.

Anti-backstoppers putting big weight on par 50 Dec'17 EU-UK Report. NB It applies to any *new* regulatory divergence in future. Terms actually covered in Juncker-Tusk letter of 14 Jan ie EU won't *impose* new regs & (unlike detractors) truly respect terms of Strands 1 & 2. /1
Anti-backstoppers claiming par 50 needs consent for backstop itself.
Not so!
Brazen given Brexiters' previous lines cheering UKSC ruling neither Brexit nor its treaty terms are subject to NI consent.
Existing ambit of Strands 1 & 2 protected by backstop, jeopardised without. /2
False arguments re "top-down imposition by EU" via Bew et al = bunkum. Misdirection distracts from attempt to ensure that future "UK-wide" measures can override & undermine existing areas of N-S cooperation, harmonisation etc & encroach envelope of Strand 1 devolved powers. /3

As one involved in negotiation of #GFA (dealing with all parties not just one) I have to refute this misconstrued "Fundamental" @TomMcTague & L Bew. Anxious about "top-down imposition" & GFA's delicacy? Why blindly uphold imposing convulsive Brexit on NI that voted Remain? /1
I would not pretend the backstop fully protects #GFA. (It is mitigation/insurance & wouldn't make up existing GFA deficits eg Rights). But given the impulses & ignorance shown in London's chaotic approaches to date noone should pretend that GFA would be upheld without it. /2
I am disappointed that Lord Bew invokes "all parties" in such a tendentious appraisal. His own top-down imposition on us? Other parties have shown more consistent adherence to letter & spirit of GFA than L Trimble & have well-founded different views on Brexit & backstop. /3

It might have been more welcome that UK govt finally look to GFA strands for Brexit answers if their paper was not so selective & distortive about "safeguarding". A pander paper slanted to curb Strand 2 potential, contort Strand 1 workings & ignore Strand 3 (&2) possibilities.
If a main point of paper is to show potential inputs for NI Exec & if serious about not altering the remit of NSMC, why not highlight par 17 of Strand 2? This would enable NI Exec views agreed in NSMC to be represented appropriately at relevant EU meetings. A unique advantage.
Why nothing on Strand 3? Could highlight bespoke input under par 7 on BIIC for NI Ministers at meetings of B & I govs on matters at their level. This might include eg those immigration issues where DUP now say they want NI to have comparability with South.

2) Why is the end result of Brexit this ridiculous fudge? What went wrong? The answer is simple - it wasn't May, or the EU, or the establishment, or filthy Remainers - it was Gove, Johnson, Stuart & all the happy clappy Vote Leave/Leave.EU crowd who ensured it would fail.
3) it wasn't just the £350m on the Bus, it was the consistent Brexit hyping - Brexit would be easy, they needed us more than we needed them, we'd get full access to the SM whilst leaving it, we had a massive defecit, of course the EU would do a deal

1) Thread - All Brexits are bad and what we voted for
It's often said by brexiters that "it's not all about economics"
However, the *actual* Leave campaign was almost wholly about economic arguments

With the leak of this 2-8% report those arguments are now trashed
2) We seem to have forgotten this however economics played a huge part in the Vote Leave campaign, making up over 2/3rds of the primary arguements. The clear message was we would at the least be no worse off and at best much better off. 4 of the 6 below state this clearly
3) & the fact is voters believed we would be no worse off. People prioritized immigration certainly, but against a backdrop of there being no consequences from Brexit - few are prepared to actually pay for ending FoM
