11/02/16 (4 days before "Election Day"):

Someone set fire to a black church and painted "Vote Trump" on the side of it. It was blamed on Trump supporters but it was actually done by a member of the church.

01/2017 - 03/2017:

Immediately after Trump took office, someone called in bomb threats to over 150 Jewish Community Centers. This was blamed on Trump and his supporters but it was done by a left-wing activist and former employee of @theintercept.

08/22/2017:

A Washington State University dorm was evacuated after swastikas were discovered painted on campus and multiple bomb threats were made This was blamed on "Neo-Nazis emboldened by Trump" but turned out to be the work of Jose Andres Tecuatl.

09/20/2017:

Someone at Eastern Michigan University painted "KKK" in red, white and blue spray paint, as well as "Leave N****rs.". This "hate crime" was blamed on Trump and attributed to his supporters but it was done by a black student.

10/30/2017:

Someone set fire at the Concord Cultural Center and spray-painting racist graffiti including "KKK", "N****" and swastikas. This was blamed on Trump and attributed to his supporters but it was done by a black church employee.

Someone painted "go home n***** boy" and "whites only" on a black person's car. It was attributed to Trump and his supporters but we later found out it was done by the person who owned the car and submitted the initial police report.

11/08/2017:

5 black cadet candidates found racial slurs on their doors at the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School, including the phrase “go home n*****”. This was blamed on Trump and his supporters but was done by one of the black cadets.

Someone wrote "White Lives Matter N******" in the bathrooms at Parkway Central high School. This was attributed to Trump and his "white supremacist rhetoric" but it was done by a "non-white" student.

This is just a small sample of the dozens, if not hundreds, of documented examples of these types of hoaxes.

It's irresponsible to immediately dismiss a "hate crime" or a "suspicious package" as a hoax, but it's equally irresponsible to NOT be skeptical when these things occur.
