how would that work? how would it benefit them? they'd cut hours and then... have to hire people to fill in. the number of hours in a day isn't changing. mc fucking donalds isn't going to put up a sign "SORY CLOSED DUE TO MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE" they literally will NEVER do that
I think it's fucking inhuman how so many businesses want to be open 8am or earlier all the way to 9pm or later, or even 24hrs, but that isn't changing. it's clearly not changing, any time soon. that's a number of hours and a number of employees they already had shaved to the atom
they already cut hours. they cut hours decades ago. the hours have been cut and businesses run on skeleton crews, that's why they want so many machines in fast food, to multiply productivity and therefore employ the fewest number of people. that was in the 70s? 80s at latest?
it's not in anyones interest that businesses staff at the bare god damn minimum but it's already done, it's finished. this is... this is... this is group action! ffs! that's why it's important! because you can't punish all your employees or you won't have any!
this is? why? unions ?are a thing ?? because you can't punish people when doing so would literally destroy your business. it takes away their options and when you do that, surprise surprise, miracle of miracles, THEY FIND MONEY THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T HAVE
that's why we need strong! fucking! labor! laws! the execs won't pay people more because the investors will fire them, but now they will simply turn to the investors and say "minimum wage went up" and the investors harrumph and then nothing happens because it's an externality.
the worst that could happen is they could close some locations but like, look at the speed mcds or starbucks or any of these big hellcorps open new locations at. they are not willing to do that, are you joking
none of that matters anyway. none of it. even if people got fired, our society should not permit a fucking below-subsistence wage, for anyone, ever. damn the possible individual consequences, the individuals are suffering anyway.
there's absolutely no way to roll the dice so they come up "pay people $8 an hour" and we have to figure out how to make that work come hell or high water
