There were some clear themes coming out of the presentations at #productized in Lisbon yesterday about #prodmgmt and #design and #culture. Here is a brief summary of what I heard:
/ Very little mention of #agile as a problem or a choice. It was just assumed by all speakers that this is the way everyone works.
/ Solving problems, not implementing solutions.
/ outcomes - measurable changes in customer behavior are the indicators of success and value, not output (making stuff)
/ Managing to outcomes using #okr is becoming widespread. Most are doing it wrong but many are trying.
/ understanding that there are many leading indicators to organizational OKR’s is key to building customer-centric teams
/ To that end, your team must build up its data literacy or risk managing to outputs (because they are binary and therefore easy to measure)
/ “Product-led” organizations win when they have a clear vision, strategy and strong leadership at all levels.
/ To that end, the only way to build product-led orgs is to have leaders who trust their teams. This requires an investment in the competence (training/mentoring/coaching) and character of the team (“no assholes”).
/ If you’re not building a product customers love using (or that make them successful) scale, growth and adoption will be far more difficult to achieve, if not impossible.
/ There will always be gaps in what you *can* do and what you *should* do. Both will make you money. You need to decide how the products you build will enforce your corporate policies with your users.
/ It was a truly interesting day of talks. I was honored to be a part of it and I learned a lot. #productized
