Previously, I extracted the 50 most followed scientists:

Now, I decided to explore who these top scientists follow.

Before continuing, I should mention that in a previous thread I looked at some of the statistics of the scientists who do climate on twitter:

The top 50 scientists in climate have collectively chosen 135k accounts to follow (94k unique).

These scientists range from following only 50 accounts (@dan_kammen needs more friends?) to 22,301 accounts (@SaleemulHuq likes everyone?) with a median of 1,468 followed accounts.

Most of the followed accounts, 76 thousand, are only followed by one of these top 50 scientists.

However, there are a number of accounts that have been followed by many of these top 50 scientists. The distribution of those repeated follows is shown here.

Many of the most frequently followed accounts are those of other top climate scientists. At the top of that list are @KHayhoe, @MichaelEMann & @ClimateOfGavin, who are followed by 45, 42 & 42 of the Top 50 respectively.

The most frequently followed non-scientists are:

The environmental journalists @EricHolthaus (42), @Revkin (34), & @afreedma (33).

And organizations:

Climate publisher @ClimateCentral (38), the @IPCC (36), the journal @NatureClimate (31), & @CarbonBrief (31)

Farther down the list there are a few politicians: @BarackObama (24), @algore (24), & @HillaryClinton (20)

And some well-known personalities not connected with climate: @AstroKatie (23), @NateSilver538 (21), @BadAstronomer (20), & @neiltyson (19)
