going to perform an informal survey. i will describe a behavior and then ask questions at the end.
i have a particular behavior that's absolutely lethal to my productivity. when I'm faced with a *chaotic* mess, I can't process it. let me detail this
if there's a pile of tools to be put away, I can put them away, even if it takes a long time. I have no trouble getting started if it's a conscious decision, I just start picking things up.
if there's a bunch of garbage on the floor, I can pick it up and throw it away. if there's a bunch of mail to sort, I can sort and distribute it
on the other hand, if I need to clean up a table that has
- screwdrivers
- miscellaneous screws
- two usb flash drives
- a small plastic cap
i go into complete paralysis. I can't begin. I can't pick up *anything*. it feels like I have ropes tying my arms together.
the more different types of things, the harder it is. if there's anything I don't know what to do with, no matter how few the items are, I can't begin. I'm nearly incapable of sorting; my brain just gives up and won't let me start, because "there's no point if I can't finish it"
Poll: Do you have this problem, and do you have or suspect you have ADHD?
you can post comments now
this was spurred, btw, by daria saying I could lay on her couch if I moved the couple things on it, and the couple things were literally: 3 audio cables. and i looked at it and felt a flush of panic. that's how bad this is.
