This week in 2008, the US bombed a wedding party in Southern Afghanistan, killing 37 civilians (including 23 woman & 10 children) w/ hundreds more injured, including the bride. The bombing lasted 5 hours and included attacks from both helicopters and fighter jets.
The bombing hit a housing complex where women and children had gathered to celebrate. Around the complex, body parts littered the wreckage and farm animals lay dead. A reporter on the scene saw many locals searching the debris for their relatives' dead bodies.
A witness to the bombing, Mohammad Nabi Khan, said that two of his sons, ages 4 and 11, and his wife's brother were among the dead. "What kind of security are the foreign troops providing in Afghanistan?" he asked.
Abdul Zahir, 24, the brother of the bride, said that his sister was severely hurt, as were three of his young cousins, Noor Ahmad, Hazrat Sadiq and Mohammad Rafiq, who range in age from three to five years old.
Mr. Zahir said in total, 8 members of his family were killed, including two of his brothers and his grandmother. In total, 14 members of his family were injured.
But the bombing wasn't the end of the ordeal. When the air strikes were over, US troops arrived and intimidated the villagers, preventing them from leaving to seek medical treatment.
Villager Abdul Jalil said the US troops arrived after the bombing and searched the villagers, took pictures, detained some of them and accused them all of sheltering the Taliban.
Jalil said to the Americans 'Come inside and see for yourself, you are killing women and children.’ "After they saw that all the dead were civilians, they gave us permission to bury the bodies," he said.
The US denied civilians were killed in the incident saying, “the facts are unclear at this point.” The US conducted its own investigation, which as always, dismissed the facts & held no one accountable for the atrocity.
