China already emits about twice as much carbon as the U.S.

And look at which direction the two countries are moving in:
Note that this is NOT due to the U.S. outsourcing its carbon emissions to China.

Here's a graph of consumption-based carbon emissions estimates, which counts imported emissions as part of the total:
Sadly, the climate doesn't give a fig about per-capita emissions. It cares only about the total. If U.S. emissions went to 0 tomorrow, the planet would still be in just as big trouble as now.

Carbon taxes are something we should absolutely do, but they'll ultimately be a drop in the bucket.

We need to focus on:
A) researching better alternative energy tech (and giving it to China, India, etc.)
B) carbon removal technology
Remember:

The climate does not care about per capita emissions, only total.

And dying more virtuous than others still means you're dead.

We must concentrate on SOLVING the problem as best we can, instead of performative moral gestures.
