People don't fight for war; they fight for peace.
They tried peace between 1918-1939. It didn't hold. So 7 years after the end of WW2, they created the European Coal & Steel Community, ensuring economic cooperation, which eventually became the EU. #Armistice100 #ArmisticeDay

I don't have a party to run / election to win, so maybe it's rich of me to stand on principle; maybe I'm naive, but...
I'm not willing to pretend that a good Brexit deal is possible just because I'm scared people (who I should have won over on Brexit) might think I'm ruining it.
I get why some might choose that due to their own strategic priorities. But if we go down the path of "keep trying Brexit until every last person is convinced it can't work":
a) We risk crashing out.
b) People would blame the EU not Brexit #HowWeGotInThisMess
c) It's dishonest
🔻The Tories want to endanger the Belfast Agreement which the EU won't allow. And even this Brexit will be rejected.
🔻Labour's Brexit must meet the 6 tests. That means Single Market & Customs Union. Parliament would never approve that for the same reasons we're stuck now.

1/ #FreedomOfMovementQuiz - answer
We asked which European Treaty introduced freedom of movement (FoM). The large majority of you was wrong. FoM was one of the founding principles of the European Coal and Steel Community which was established via the Treaty of Paris in 1951.
2/ Article 69 of the Treaty of Rome allowed workers to move freely between the member states and protected them from discrimination.
3/ thus, Freedom of Movement was already part of the package the UK signed up to in 1973 when it joined.

There have been a few occasions recently that I’ve been presented with the argument that ‘the EU wasn’t responsible for peace in Europe, that was NATO’, so rather than having to explain every time why this argument is wrong, I thought I’d make a quick thread to refer back to. 1/
NATO is a military alliance that was set up in 1949 to provide security for Western states against the growing threat of the USSR. It included European and North American states. It was not concerned with the relationships between European nations. 2/
The EU, however, started life as the European Coal & Steel Community (ECSC). It was created with the explicit purpose to make war between European states ‘not only unthinkable but materially impossible’. 3/

Heard JS talk at the inaugural @EtuUnion conference. He really does GET what a just transition means - maintaining good jobs in communities
One of his lines then was about, "we can't just expect everyone on the West Coast to be tour guides and baristas". Really stuck with me!
It's too easy to say "just stop mining, it's bad for the environment." Whole towns have been built around mining and other "bad" industries
