(The limping old man described in that passage was an elected official in a legal government, not some guerrilla, and in many ways Chile's Communist Party in the early 70s was more moderate than even President Allende's Socialist Party)
Cronyism, spiraling debt and consumption, low wages and unemployment, and environmental degradation: a few of the reasons "shock therapy" under Pinochet didn't work out quite as advertised (again, written by the Financial Times correspondent):
