I thought I'd seen most of the grubbiness in life, but there's always something new. This nasty bunch are the latest example, finding a way to blame others, in order to deflect from Facebook's negligence.

"Let us help you tell outrageous lies, before someone else does"
With House of Cards (both the British and American version) increasingly looking like they represent the heady innocent days of high integrity politics, we have to wonder where and how it all got out of control.

It used to be a lie was unacceptable. Now the truth is unexpected
Unfortunately, I don't expect our politicians to be able to hold themselves accountable to truth, any more than I expect bankers to invest responsibily, never pushing the limits of creative accounting, or wrapping up bad assets in good ones to hide the excrement.
But here's the thing, in times gone by both the bankers and the politicians were, to some extent, kept in check by the media.

The media were anything but perfect, often deeply corrupt, frequently partisan and almost always owned by nefarious rich old men with their own agendas
Now in the world of social media, not only have the media become a shadow of their former selves, they've also begun to legitimate the lies.
Where previously am organisation might have been partisan, now they're ready to make up the lies to protect their vested interests.
We now have to deal with this corrupted media establishment, for if we do not, they in turn will not deal with the politicians, and if they don't deal with the politicians, our society which was built on science and truth will tumble as it's eaten away by dogma and lies.
The answer is
1. regulation of social media like other organisations (stop the platforms lie)
2. A levy on all media to pay for independent and impartial fact checking.

Organisations such as the nasty one this thread started with cannot survive if the truth is not malliable.
A playbook for this has already been proposed.
