My mom: That just confirms my theory that in twenty years I’ll be sitting in a nursing home with a bunch of droolers, and no one will be able to remember our names or what we had for lunch, but we’ll still be arguing about music. “That’s definitely Ginger Baker on the drums!”

Now she’s driving and I’m reading her articles about people donating their tattooed skin to be displayed posthumously at museums. #momtrip

I really hate the expression "be your best self." It promotes an external, competitive, airbrushy selfhood that makes me feel anxious (which, I suspect, is the point) & rebellious (probably not the point). "Be your best self" says "because you sure as hell ain't her right now."
Who is this person? Your Best Self? Because she seems like your very worst friend, raising an eyebrow when you skip the gym, judging you for eating a cookie: "Is that what your best self would do?" Fuck you, I want to say, my best self loves cookies.
Why does your Best Self seem to look like everyone else, act like everyone else, & shop like everyone else? Is it possible this so-called Best Self is actually a fabrication of consumer culture, the same impulse magazines use to sell makeup & clothes & weirdly expensive candles?

Among other disasters, 2018 was the year I lost my sweet Zia. So many of my Twitter friends showed up for me through her dying process and death, and I will be eternally grateful to every single person who sent me hugs, kind notes, encouragement, support, etc.
Twitter gets a lot of shit, much of it warranted, but it can also be an amazing community full of compassionate, kind people. Losing Zia would have been harder without you all. ❤️

Years ago my friend threw me an amazing birthday party and while we were cleaning up one of us dropped a glass and we were both extremely lit at this point and also subscribed to Real Simple, so were like “we need a potato to safely pick up the shards!”
And we were immensely proud of ourselves for about two minutes until we realized that we didn’t have a potato. “Let’s use an onion!”
And bc of how memory and friendship work, the ensuing drunken attempt to use half a raw onion to pick up shards of glass while wearing cocktail dresses and heels, before wisely giving up and trying again in the morning will be one of my fondest recollections until I die.

Mueller can produce evidence that Paul Manafort lied to fed investigators about his contacts with a Russian Spy and Trump officials, according to sentencing memos filed against Manafort.

THIS IMPLICATES TRUMP AND FAMILY MEMBERS IN A CONSPIRACY.

Trump likely perjured himself in written answers to the Special Counsel’s questions last month, assuming he had the cover of Manafort’s lies.

Does anyone know of a graph of voting percentage organized in cohorts by age? I’d like to know whether the generation born in the fifties has *always* had high turn-out or whether it has really escalated as they’ve got older.
Found this from Pew which is interesting and covers the last twenty years or so: pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2018…
From this graph alone you can’t tell much except that Gen X has definitely had more turn out as they’ve aged. But at a *glance* it looks like older generations start from a higher base. Hard to tell with only twenty years of data.

Nursing, a thread:

Saturday- my kid and his family kicked my butt, wore me out, had me frustrated, emotional, overwhelmed.

Sometimes you advocate so hard, and people listen and don’t listen and challenge you and you leave exhausted.

I didn’t want to do it again on Sunday.
Sunday- I have the same kid back.
He’s sedated/intubated

I don’t expect many changes for the day, but the team had other plans so we end up cutting sedation & preparing for extubation.

These are all good signs. The family is excited. The patient is scared
I get the family to leave the room, and the patient nods and tears up when I ask him about his worries.

Seeing absolute fear in a child’s eyes pulls your heart harder than anything else. I hold his hand, pray with him, we listen to his favorite music, & put on a brave face.
