“It’s pretty terrible down here, tons of babies and toddlers and people sleeping outside. We are in Mexicali today doing ‘know your rights’ classes, but there are lots of issues because US is only accepting people for asylum who are presented by Mexican authorities...(Cont.)
and the Mexican authorities are not putting many Central American families on the list because they do not have permission to be in Mexico. One Mexican official told a family traveling with small children & an 8 month pregnant woman to go back to southern Mexico...(cont.)
...seek permission to enter and then come back here to get on the list to ask for asylum in the US. have been able to assist some unaccompanied children to present themselves to the US for asylum, but no families... (Cont.)
The families are getting desperate and are considering going to Tijuana, but conditions are worse there for families and really dangerous. (Cont.)
We are currently making the rounds of shelters in Mexicali to assess the needs of families still here.
