If I can’t work out how to connect my washing machine to the internet, what hope is there for everyone else?!
We’re on! Seems to be listing an SSID for every AP in the house (I have a few...). And also, what kind of washing machine doesn’t support 5G?! Regardless, the washing machine is now downloading...

So now I have my washing machine on an isolated IoT network pulling down 72Mbps using the AP in my entertainment room and can monitor it via all the @ubnt bits. Welcome to the future 😎

This one is obviously a real mess and deserves some more background so let me share what I know:
Firstly, they've acknowledged the breach and taken the sites down pretty promptly once we managed to get through to them. Here's their disclosure on the root of their site (link to a "safe for work" archive version): web.archive.org/web/2018102018…
But there are multiple inaccuracies, the first being the disclosure date which was 3 days earlier than represented. Here's the first attempt I made to a published address of theirs:

I've had a heap of people pointing me to this post by @meyerweb and I want to add some thoughts in a tweet stream. Start by reading the post because it really is excellent and should remind us all of how different things are in other parts of the world
I want to make sure people don't see this as a reason not to do HTTPS so I've had a good chat to @meyerweb and want to put a few things in context. The first is this: caching in this fashion is the very definition of a "man in the middle" and has serious privacy ramifications.
It's clear why it's being done, but let that not cause us to lose sight of everyone's right to have private and secure communications. That said, there are a bunch of other angles to this:

I've had a heap of press and individual queries on Australia's #MyHealthRecord over the last week. This is essentially centralised electronic health records that everyone will get unless explicitly opting out. Here's my thoughts:
Firstly, we need to acknowledge there's upsides and downsides; I want the right people to have my health info should they need it (especially in an emergency), but clearly I don't want that info falling into the wrong hands either.
On the upsides: it's crazy how manual the processing of our health records is today. Think about the amount of paperwork in your GP's surgery or the material you literally carry around to specialists if you need them. Then consider how easily accessible this is in an emergency.

Curious article that is more complex than a simple agreement or disagreement from me.

While I perhaps should do a proper response in an article format, I disagree with several key notions. These are part of the intense complexity involved with the TNI as an organization.
1. The political nature of the TNI is underestimated - domestically and within the military. For example, its the TNI-AU hosting this exercise: they dream of external threats because then they get a role to operate.

The malleability of US public opinion on trade is something I first noticed years ago (and briefly discussed in this paper from 2011: cato.org/publications/f…). Trade polls have long fluctuated depending on politics, rhetoric & the economy. /3

oh, nice! so I had an ISO with two files in it:

I extracted it to two places: ~/Downloads and ~/Documents

those two places became read-only
because of course it tried to extract . to the current directory, which it is, and applied its permissions, which were of course read-only because it's off an ISO
fun fact: taking this screenshot failed the first time, cause ~/Downloads is where my screenshotter saves images...
