Thread:Was travelling the entire day through cyclone Gaja affected areas, especially the interior villages. All these days, sitting in Chennai, I never realised the magnitude of the destruction. The towns maybe slowly limping back to normalcy but that’s not the case with villages
While travelling through Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Vedaranyam and Nagapattinam, one can see protests by villagers almost everywhere. A week has passed. But even now there is no electricity. No food. No drinking water. No proper shelter and no means of communication.
Villagers stand on the roadside to reach out to the politicians and officials visiting the place. They would run towards their car and plead for help. Some of them get extremely angry when they don’t stop their cars. The anger amongst people is something that cannot be missed.
Most of them have lost their farms and crops, their biggest source of livelihood, due to the cyclone. There is massive damage to property as well. The one thing most of them had to say was this: “we have lost everything and we don’t know how to recover from this disaster.”
If you start counting the number of electricity poles that have been destroyed, it is not going to be an easy task. The lines have snapped. The poles have fallen. It is going to take weeks for them to restore the power supply in these villages.
However, there are real life heroes like them who are working overtime to make sure that life comes back to normalcy soon. Having said that, there is very little restoration work that is carried out in the interior villages. Officials are mostly concentrating on the towns.
People are extremely angry with the state government. Let there be no doubt about that. They are angry because nobody is coming to visit them. They are angry because nobody is listening to them. They are angry because they have no one to complain to or ask for help.
It is during disasters like these that one realises the importance of having local body representatives. The absence of local bodies is only adding to their woes. Where do they go for help? Who do they approach? Nobody knows.
They are waiting. They wait like this on the road even when it’s pitch dark. Waiting for help to arrive. Waiting for their lives to go back to how it was before the cyclone. Waiting to recover from this disaster. #SaveDelta #Support4Delta
I can go on and on about the problems faced by these villagers and I can go on and on about the poor response of the govt and their apathy. But all I want to say is: delta needs your help. Help them in whatever capacity you can. HELP THEM! #CycloneGaja #Support4Delta #SaveDelta
