It's actually not obvious to some why you shouldn't use a daily WEATHER map to say anything about climate change ...

This is with respect to @realDonaldTrump inane Tweet.

This goes for when the weather is warm or cold.

First, these daily weather maps are misleading because they not only mix two different weather model systems, but because they present the entire globe's temperatures compared to a local climatology or historical mean (2/n)

Good example of why this is misleading: in NYC today, the temperature was 30°F below normal for the morning low & daytime high.

That magnitude of anomaly just doesn't happen in the Equatorial Pacific tropics --> El Nino is triggered by about 1°F warm anomaly. Yes -- 1°F (3/n)

Thus, it makes no sense to use this map to compare the warm colors (red) and cool colors (blue).

Why?

If you take the average global temperature anomaly of 0.5°C and only plotted that on the map -- one color -- it would be entirely white space! (4/n)

Today, a major climate report is being released by the government -- buried on a Black Friday -- and coincidentally on one of the coldest days in the Northeast since the 1880s. Trump has already mocked/trolled global warming dozens of time on Twitter (5/n)

But in response to Trump, some climate scientists (who don't hide their own partisan -- extreme left political views) shopped the daily weather maps through various media outlets, wrote misleading/dishonest Tweets.

Instead of making a coherent argument about why daily weather (warm / cold) is a poor way to convince people to take climate change policy action -- media & leftist climate scientists were instead playing to their anti-Trump audience and failing overall. It's kind of sad. (7/7)
