Many a time, individuals think they have ‘arrived’ when they get the top job. They don’t realize the journey has just begun!
Being the CEO of an organization is one of the most difficult challenges a person can face in a career.
Many a CEO has fallen on their own swords and failed as CEOs. A CEO has to avoid these pitfalls that will lead to their failure eventually.

Pitfall #1: Status
While CEOs are free to enjoy an elevated status in their organizations, it is important not to consider status as more important over results. Unsuspecting and under-informed CEOs bask in the glory of the title and forget to back it with results.
Pitfall #2: Popularity
Gone are the days when a CEO will make every effort to be seen as the ‘good guy’ and, as a result, become popular among the staff. This profile would better fit the movies or the church instead of a business organization.
Drive for populism breeds insincerity and indecisiveness. The only strategy to overcome this pitfall is to meet direct reports immediately about behavior and performance and clarify expectations up front to make performance discussions easier.
Pitfall #3: Certainty
Certainty happens when CEOs don’t make it absolutely clear what their subordinates are responsible and accountable for. This makes it difficult for them to call the subordinates to book when things go wrong.
