Kent State Geology faculty have voted to #droptheGRE from our graduate admissions process, and we're compiling a list of other programs doing the same to help make the case to the administration. #GRExit

Why do want to #droptheGRE? We've found it doesn't predict success in our program. It's also a financial barrier for applicants, especially international applicants who may have to travel for hours to take the test. #GRExit

The lack of correlation between GRE score and grad school success isn't unique to our program. Multiple analyses have shown that it's a bad predictor of success. #droptheGRE

As this article succinctly puts it: "The exam “is a proxy for asking ‘Are you rich?’ ‘Are you white?’ ‘Are you male?’”"

What the nature editorial says is this: "In simple terms, the GRE is a better indicator of sex and skin colour than of ability and ultimate success."

Many STEM fields, especially the geosciences, already have enough diversity problems without throwing another barrier up for non-white, non-male applicants. If we want an inclusive and intellectually rich discipline, moving to #droptheGRE is an obvious step to take.

TL;DR The GRE is a biased test that doesn't predict success in grad school.
So help us make the case to our university by adding all of the universities, programs, etc. that have already moved to #droptheGRE to the document I'm compiling here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d…. Please RT!

Live update from the College Curriculum Committee. They support us dropping the GRE. And other programs are doing it too! Now onto the university level committee in February. #droptheGRE #GRExit
