CMS is suggesting some ideas for states that want to refashion their individual health insurance markets.
These new templates build on new guidance for how states can pursue “innovation waivers.” Under Obama-era rules, most of these approaches wouldn’t be allowed. nytimes.com/2018/10/22/us/…

It seems liken their concept for an account-like federal subsidy the amount would not be pegged to premium prices.

This new report on national health expenditures in 2017 is a great occasion to bring back the term “slowth,” which I believe to be a @ddiamond coinage. healthaffairs.org/doi/abs/10.137…?
"Slowth" stands for slow growth. Health spending went up last year, but by a lot less than health spending has grown historically--and by less than the overall economy grew. This is good news.

I’m reading the new 1332 waiver guidance document now.

First up: New jargon.

The new guidance prioritizes private over public insurance. This could make it harder for states to get waivers for, say, a single-payer system, one of the original purposes of the program. Also, could make Medicaid buy-in hard.
This looks to be a slightly new goal. ACA says only that the plans shouldn't increase federal spending.

Awful healthcare news for Virginia.

Last year we stopped Trump/GOP attempts to repeal the ACA and strip health insurance from 23 million people. They responded by sabotaging the healthcare system.

We just learned that this is going to cause Virginians’ premiums to skyrocket. 1/
“Skyrocket” = double-digit increases, up to 64%, depending on your insurer and plan.

There is no way to sugarcoat these health insurance premium hikes: they are across different insurers, they are devastating, and many will not be able to afford them. 2/
Why is this happening? The insurers themselves attribute it to Republican actions.

The #GOPTaxScam removed the individual mandate, causing healthy people to drop out of the individual market and driving up costs for everyone else... 3/

2/ In recent weeks, the Iowa state House and Senate passed a bill, which was just signed into law today by the Governor, which would allow the state Farm Bureau to open up non-ACA-compliant “health plans” (NOT legally defined as “insurance”) to ANYONE.
3/ The only reason these plans are legal to sell is because they aren’t legally defined as “health insurance” in the first place. That means they aren’t subject to ACA regulations. That means they can once again deny coverage (or charge thru the nose) people w/pre-existing conds.
