This new report on national health expenditures in 2017 is a great occasion to bring back the term “slowth,” which I believe to be a @ddiamond coinage. healthaffairs.org/doi/abs/10.137…?
"Slowth" stands for slow growth. Health spending went up last year, but by a lot less than health spending has grown historically--and by less than the overall economy grew. This is good news.

CMS is suggesting some ideas for states that want to refashion their individual health insurance markets.
These new templates build on new guidance for how states can pursue “innovation waivers.” Under Obama-era rules, most of these approaches wouldn’t be allowed. nytimes.com/2018/10/22/us/…

I’m reading the new 1332 waiver guidance document now.

First up: New jargon.

The new guidance prioritizes private over public insurance. This could make it harder for states to get waivers for, say, a single-payer system, one of the original purposes of the program. Also, could make Medicaid buy-in hard.
This looks to be a slightly new goal. ACA says only that the plans shouldn't increase federal spending.

I have spent a year reading emergency room bills. I've read about 1,200 of them.

A few months ago, I noticed that one hospital had bills that were *really* different from the rest: Zuckerberg San Francisco General. (1/11)

Zuckerberg San Francisco General is the largest hospital in the city.

It is San Francisco's only level one trauma center.

But it is not in-network with any private health insurance plan. (2/11)
This is *really* unusual. Like I said, I have read hundreds of ER bills.

Sometimes doctors are out-of-network. But the ER itself is almost always in-network.

That makes a lot of sense: patients often don't get a choice in where to seek care in an emergent situation (3/11)

Not a single Democrat has proposed socialized medicine (i.e. doctors are employees of the government and hospitals owned by the government) for universal health care, so not a single Democrat has proposed "government-run health care." This is basic stuff, @voxdotcom.
A "rallying cry on the left"? 52% of Republicans and 70% of Americans want #MedicareForAll. But, I guess "centrists demand Medicare-for-all" doesn't really fit your narrative.

Mrs May didn't tell the truth today when she implied stopping EU citizens' free movement into the UK was not going to stop British people's automatic right to live, study, work or retire anywhere on the continent.
I should know. I arrived penniless in France in the early 80s when there were no jobs in the UK. Since then I have been working, living and loving in Paris, Berlin and Brussels - visa and hassle-free all over the place ! Brits will no longer be able to do this.
Take her point about Erasmus. Ask young Swiss people about that ! They have been denied it since Switzerland stopped free movement in 2014. They have been trying to get back into Erasmus ever since. So many young people who could have experienced so many cultures, languages.

No, @realDonaldTrump, #MedicareForAll doesn't end Medicare for seniors or "take away benefits"! Rather, it *expands* Medicare to everyone -- increasing young and healthy in the insurance pool -- which allows for huge *improvement* and *expansion* of benefits. A better Medicare!
No, you haven't, @realDonaldTrump. Your administration is suing to end pre-existing condition protections. You have also allowed short-term junk "insurance" plans -- with no ACA protections -- to be sold again. These discriminate against the sick, women, and anyone who needs care

In my 8yrs on the Council, I have convened 7 hearings on #trauma, each with a different focus. Although more work remains, I am encouraged to hear that many of the recs offered up by impacted persons & communities at our hrgs & listening sessions were integrated into new system
Data collection of phase 1 implementation indicates that 75% of clients for #trauma response and recovery efforts were #Black #AfricanAmerican #Hispanic #Latino, AND 74% of clients reported chronic exposure to a single (11%) or multiple forms of #violence (63%)
