It's about looking into the future, seeing exactly what awaits us, and being unable to capitalize on this knowledge, because you only know *what* will be and not *when* it will be.

economists gave students an incentivised trivia quiz where the students needed to show knowledge of countries' capital cities and deliberately let the students cheat
then, in two months they gave the same students the same quiz but strictly monitored cheating

Results:
• correct answers dropped 50%
• many (23/125) students cheated maximally (contrary to Ariely)
• Higher GPA students cheated more
1. first round correct answers
2. second round correct answers
3. difference between rounds (apparently, most students either didn't cheat or cheated all the way)

A few observations from "The Science of Science", a useful review article appearing in this week's Science: barabasi.com/f/939.pdf
Number of articles grows exponentially (doubling time: 15 years), while number of "ideas" (measured by examining unique phrases in title) grows linearly.
Apparently there is evidence that interdisciplinary work is viewed as more valuable after the fact, but less valuable before. (cc @davidmanheim, evidence supporting your tweets earlier)
