WI Republicans are responding to an election loss by planning to make it harder for people to vote.
At this point, they have become very comfortable in using power to choose their voters, rather than allowing voters to choose them. 1/
The same WI Republicans adopted one of the strictest voter ID laws in the country, and some acknowledged it was to help their electoral outcomes by making it harder for people who don't support them to vote 2/

The same GOP leaders created perhaps the most gerrymandered state in the country, able to convert 46% of the state assembly vote into 63% of the seats (geographical sorting also contributes to this disparity). 3/
The same WI Republicans disbanded a non-partisan election oversight body after it participated in an investigation of potential campaign finance violations by Gov Walker. They replaced them with a group of political appointees. 4/ wpr.org/assembly-commi…
The same WI Republicans have already restricted voting opportunities by curbing early voting. In particular, they targeted early voting on Sundays, stopping "souls to polls" voter drives by black churches. 5/ motherjones.com/politics/2017/…
WI Republicans have justified making it harder for people to vote by invoking the phantom of voter fraud, and no doubt they will again. As I note in my book with @pamela_herd, Reagan appointee Richard Posner tore this argument apart. 6/ russellsage.org/publications/a…
Changing the rules of the game because you don't like the outcomes of democratic processes shows little commitment to democracy. But this has been a pretty stable and predictable pattern for WI Republicans since 2010. 7/
The WI GOP is also planning to spend millions to change the election calendar to benefit their candidate in a Supreme Court race. After Scott Walker argued last year that he did not have to call special elections because they are too costly 8/
Understand that journalists covering this topic need to report the GOP rationales for changing the rules of the game. But a) they have a clear partisan intent, and b) are part of a much broader pattern of use of state power for partisan gain. Both points deserve mention. 9/
After losing, despite the gerrymandering, the voter ID laws, the shutting down of campaign finance investigations, the GOP justifies its effort to further curb voter access because they are "the most representative branch." Unbelievable. 10/
Update - WI’s Governor-elect Tony Evers: the GOP is trying to invalidate the last election. Calls on citizens to join him in fighting against this power-grab. 11/ jsonline.com/story/news/pol…
